Sharks Edge Ducks 5-4 with Celebrini’s Stellar Performance
The San Jose Sharks secured a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on December 25, 2023, at the Honda Center. Rookie sensation Macklin Celebrini played a pivotal role, scoring a first-period goal and assisting on two others, marking his tenth three-point game of the season. The Sharks’ triumph also represents their fifth win in the last eight games.
Joining Celebrini on the scoresheet were Mario Ferraro, Igor Chernyshov, William Eklund, and Zack Ostapchuk, with Ostapchuk netting his first goal in a Sharks uniform late in the third period. His goal at the 13:47 mark extended San Jose’s lead to 5-3. However, the Ducks responded with a goal from Troy Terry just minutes later, narrowing the deficit to one point as they sought to capitalize on a pulled goalie, Petr Mrazek.
Despite the pressure, Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov stood strong, achieving a remarkable 39 saves throughout the match. The Sharks also successfully killed a late penalty against defenseman John Klingberg, maintaining their narrow lead.
Celebrini’s performance was particularly notable, but it took a concerning turn when he left the game with 14:48 remaining in the third period. A shot from Ducks forward Alex Killorn deflected off the stick of defenseman Sam Dickinson and struck Celebrini in the face, causing him to fall to the ice. Fortunately, he returned with 6:13 left in the third, bearing visible marks near his left eye.
The Sharks struggled defensively in the first period, allowing several rush chances and recording eight giveaways. Nevertheless, they managed to take an early lead. Midway through the first period, Alexander Wennberg received a pass from Adam Gaudette, advanced into the Ducks’ zone, and set up Ferraro for a goal that marked the 100th point of his NHL career. After a miscue by Askarov that led to a Ducks goal, the Sharks quickly regained the advantage. Celebrini capitalized on a Ducks turnover, assisting Tyler Toffoli before redirecting a pass from Wennberg past Ducks goalie Lukas Dostal for a 2-1 lead.
The Sharks’ ability to maintain composure despite the Ducks’ late surge indicates their growing resilience. As the season progresses, they will look to build on this performance, particularly with key players like Celebrini emerging as impactful contributors.
