Duffy Urges End to Government Shutdown as TSA Workers Go Unpaid

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has called for an end to the ongoing partial government shutdown that affects funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This shutdown, which has left Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers without pay, has sparked criticism from Duffy, particularly aimed at Democratic lawmakers led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

In a post on the social media platform X on Sunday, Duffy highlighted a letter from Airlines for America, a coalition representing major U.S. airlines. The letter urges Congress to resolve the funding deadlock, emphasizing the negative impact on air travel and the TSA workforce. Duffy wrote, “AIRLINE CEOs: ENOUGH OF THE SCHUMER DHS SHUTDOWN,” praising the airline CEOs for advocating for TSA employees who are currently missing their paychecks.

The letter from Airlines for America pointed out that Americans are frustrated with lengthy airport lines, travel delays, and flight cancellations resulting from the shutdown. It noted that the upcoming Spring Break and the FIFA World Cup 2026 could exacerbate these issues. As U.S. airlines anticipate a record 171 million passengers this spring, the letter expressed concern over the “extraordinarily long” wait times at airport checkpoints.

TSA employees are feeling the immediate financial strain as several major airports across the United States have called for community support. They are encouraging the public to donate food, gas, and grocery gift cards to assist TSA workers during this challenging period.

The ongoing shutdown stems from a legislative stalemate regarding funding for the DHS. Lawmakers are at an impasse following multiple incidents involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that resulted in fatalities. According to a report by CNBC, Democratic lawmakers recently proposed a bill to fund the TSA, Coast Guard, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, but it was blocked. In contrast, a funding package from Republican leaders aimed at temporarily financing the DHS for two weeks was also rejected by the Democrats.

The situation remains tense as both parties struggle to find common ground, leaving TSA employees and travelers caught in the middle of the deadlock. As the shutdown continues, the pressure mounts on lawmakers to reach a resolution that ensures the timely payment of essential workers and the smooth operation of air travel across the nation.
