Kiowa County Extension Hosts Engaging Quilting Workshops for All Ages
Kiowa County Extension Services successfully hosted a series of quilting workshops for both youth and adults on February 27 and 28, 2024. The workshops were led by experienced instructors Carole Spady and Mary Rhodes, who provided valuable guidance throughout the sessions. Generous donations from Dorothy Ellicott, a long-time supporter of 4-H and homemaking initiatives, ensured that participants had all the necessary materials to enjoy their crafting experience.
The youth workshop on Friday was particularly vibrant, as four young ladies engaged enthusiastically in sewing activities. Guided by their instructors, they crafted a variety of projects, including a Christmas tree ornament, a travel tissue pack cover, a pillowcase cover, and a sunglasses case. This hands-on learning experience allowed them to explore their creativity while developing practical skills.
On Saturday, the adult workshop attracted eleven eager participants, some of whom traveled from nearby towns such as Lamar, Cheyenne Wells, Rocky Ford, and Las Animas. During the introductions, attendees shared personal stories about the individuals who inspired their interest in crafting and sewing, creating an uplifting atmosphere.
Carole Spady and Mary Rhodes provided expert instruction, sharing helpful tips and techniques as participants learned to create a table topper. The adult group left the workshop feeling inspired and equipped to further develop their quilting skills.
The success of the workshops can be attributed to the dedication of several individuals. Carole invested numerous hours preparing materials in advance, while her fellow instructor, Mary, also contributed significantly to the workshop’s success. Additional thanks go to Krystal Eikenberg and Eve Clark for their assistance with setup, cleanup, and support throughout the events.
This initiative not only fostered creativity but also strengthened community bonds among quilting enthusiasts in Kiowa County. The workshops exemplified the spirit of collaboration and learning, highlighting the importance of sharing skills across generations. The Kiowa County Extension Services looks forward to hosting similar events in the future, continuing to inspire creativity and craftsmanship within the community.
