Heisman Winner Fernando Mendoza Honors Mother’s Battle with MS
In a heartfelt tribute during the Heisman Trophy acceptance ceremony on December 13, 2025, Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for Indiana University, dedicated the prestigious award to his mother, Elsa Mendoza, who has been battling multiple sclerosis (MS). This emotional moment came as Mendoza prepares to lead his team against Alabama in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2026.
Elsa Mendoza, who uses a wheelchair due to the effects of MS, has been a source of inspiration for her son and his brother, Alberto Mendoza, both of whom are quarterbacks for the Indiana Hoosiers. The brothers actively raise funds to combat the disease, raising awareness about MS and its impact on families.
A Journey Together
Elsa Mendoza was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis approximately 18 years ago. Her condition worsened significantly about five years ago after she contracted COVID-19. In a letter published in The Players’ Tribune just before the Heisman ceremony, she reflected on her unique bond with Fernando. “You’re a teammate at heart,” she wrote. “I’ve been lucky enough to know that for a much longer time than most people…and not just because I’m your mom.”
She expressed the deep connection she feels with her son, likening their journey through life’s challenges to a partnership. “It’s like we were each dealing with our own exciting/scary new thing. And the way we got through it was together,” she added.
Celebrating Resilience
During his acceptance speech, Fernando Mendoza acknowledged the profound influence his mother has had on his life and career. “Mommy, this is your trophy as much as it is mine,” he stated. “You’ve always been my biggest fan. You’re my life. You’re my why.” He emphasized her sacrifices and the lessons he learned from her, stating, “You taught me that toughness doesn’t need to be loud. It can be quiet and strong. It’s choosing hope.”
Fernando Mendoza, originally from Boston and raised in Miami, is the eldest of the Mendoza siblings. Both of his grandparents emigrated from Cuba to Miami, instilling a strong familial and cultural foundation in their family. As the starting quarterback for Indiana, he has made significant contributions to the team’s success this season.
With the Rose Bowl approaching, the Mendoza family continues to inspire others through their resilience and commitment to raising awareness about multiple sclerosis. Fernando and Alberto’s efforts to support this cause highlight the importance of community and family in overcoming personal challenges.
As the Mendoza family prepares to face Alabama on New Year’s Day, their journey serves as a reminder of hope and determination in the face of adversity.
