Ravens Seek New Head Coach After John Harbaugh’s Departure
The Baltimore Ravens are on the hunt for a new head coach following the firing of John Harbaugh on December 26, 2023. This decision ends Harbaugh’s 18-year tenure with the franchise, which has been marked by significant achievements, including a Super Bowl victory in the 2012 season. The move comes just two days after the Ravens concluded their season with a disappointing 8-9 record, a performance that fell well short of the expectations set at the beginning of the season.
Harbaugh’s departure follows a de facto AFC North championship game loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, highlighting a season plagued by injuries and overall underperformance. Throughout his time with the Ravens, Harbaugh posted a regular-season record of 180-113 and a playoff record of 13-11. Now, the franchise prepares to welcome its fourth head coach in history.
As the Ravens begin their search, several names have emerged as potential candidates. Below is an overview of some individuals being considered for the role, listed alphabetically by last name.
Potential Candidates for Head Coach
Joe Brady, currently the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, is a name that has circulated in coaching discussions for several years. At just 36 years old, Brady gained acclaim in 2019 when he was part of the coaching staff at LSU, which won the national championship. After two seasons with the Carolina Panthers, he has helped lead a top-10 scoring offense with the Bills over the past three years.
Brian Flores, the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, represents a compelling option. At 44, Flores has demonstrated his ability to build aggressive defenses following his tenure as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. His experience with high-pressure situations and a strong winning attitude could be advantageous for the Ravens. However, he must improve his relationship management after past conflicts with players.
Kliff Kingsbury, recently dismissed from his role as the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator, has experience that could translate well to Baltimore. At 46, Kingsbury managed an impressive offensive turnaround with Jayden Daniels at the helm last season. His offensive philosophy, focused on spacing and quarterback confidence, could be beneficial in maximizing the talent of quarterback Lamar Jackson.
Another name to consider is Klint Kubiak, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. Kubiak, 38, has enjoyed success with a high-scoring offense this season, leading the Seahawks to the NFC’s No. 1 seed. His familiarity with the Ravens’ offensive style, thanks to his father’s history with the team, makes him an intriguing candidate.
Mike LaFleur, the Rams’ offensive coordinator, is also in the mix. At 38, LaFleur has played a critical role in guiding the Rams to the top offensive rankings in the league. His ability to develop a potent offense alongside quarterback Matthew Stafford is a testament to his coaching skills.
Former Ravens assistant Jesse Minter, now the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers, could provide continuity while injecting fresh ideas. At 42, Minter previously contributed to the Ravens’ defensive evolution and has built a strong reputation for his teaching abilities.
Robert Saleh, currently the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, is expected to be a candidate this offseason. His previous experience as head coach of the Jets provides him with insight into managing a franchise, although his record there (20-36) raises questions about his ability to lead effectively.
Lastly, Chris Shula, the Rams’ defensive coordinator, is another potential candidate. With a coaching lineage that includes both his father and grandfather, Shula has worked his way up through the ranks and would represent a shift towards a younger coaching philosophy.
Additionally, Kevin Stefanski, recently fired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, could offer an immediate turnaround option. The two-time Coach of the Year led the Browns to two playoff appearances and possesses valuable postseason experience.
As the Ravens navigate this pivotal moment in their franchise history, the selection of a new head coach will be crucial for the future trajectory of the team. The search is expected to be thorough, reflecting the importance of this decision for both players and fans alike.
