New Stars Shine in Girls Wrestling as Season Unfolds
The early phase of the 2025-26 girls wrestling season has seen emerging challengers and significant milestones as teams across New Jersey compete in various tournaments. With crucial dual meets scheduled for the next six weeks, the focus remains on tournament results, where both expected performances and surprising outcomes have been prevalent.
Record-Breaking Achievements
One standout story is that of Kylie Gudewitz from Howell, who has made history by becoming the state’s winningest girls wrestler. Following her groundbreaking achievement of 100 career wins last year as a junior, Gudewitz surpassed the previous record of 120 wins, held by Emme Hoarle of Somerville. On January 1, 2026, during the Lady Minuteman Tournament held at the Dunn Center in Elizabeth, she secured her 121st victory by pinning Madison’s Marianna Zegal in the quarterfinals. She followed this with a 10-0 major decision over Noelanii Guzman Caban from Elmwood Park, marking her 122nd win.
Despite her record-setting performance, Gudewitz did not clinch the tournament title, losing to River Dell’s Jocelyn Danbe in a closely contested final, ending with a score of 8-6. Reflecting on her journey, Gudewitz remarked, “It means a lot that I am able to accomplish such things. When I was little, I never thought I’d be able to do any of this.” Her aspirations remain focused on winning a second state title, set to take place in March in Atlantic City.
Dominance and Rising Stars
Another significant competitor this season is Reagan Roxas from Kingsway, who continues to impress with her performance at the Queen of the East tournament, held on December 20, 2025. Roxas captured her fourth consecutive title at this prestigious event, defeating Samirah Duron from Egg Harbor 3-0 in the final. As the defending state champion at 120 pounds and a member of the 100 win club, her achievement of a four-year sweep at The Queen highlights her dominance in the sport.
While Roxas has experienced some setbacks in other tournaments, including a second-place finish at the Lady Bear Invitational, her status as a leading competitor remains unchallenged. Notably, her consistent performance has built a legacy that few in New Jersey can claim.
Freshman talent is also making waves this season. Adrienne Rodriguez from Bloomfield has established herself by defeating several ranked opponents and winning the Bloomfield Girls Holiday Tournament. Her decisive victories, including a final pin against Leeah Gutierrez, showcase her potential as a formidable contender in the future.
Another promising freshman, Noelanii Guzman Caban, began her season with a tough loss but quickly turned the tide, winning 12 consecutive matches. Her notable victories included titles at both the Garfield Girls Holiday Tournament and the Bloomfield Girls Holiday Tournament, demonstrating her ability to compete at a high level.
As the season progresses, the dynamics among established stars and rising athletes will continue to evolve. The results from the early tournaments have set the stage for an exciting competition ahead, with teams and individual wrestlers striving for excellence in the upcoming dual meets and state championships.
In summary, the 2025-26 girls wrestling season is shaping up to be one of fierce competition, marked by record-breaking achievements and the emergence of new talent. As the action unfolds, fans can anticipate ongoing developments that will further highlight the growth and excitement surrounding girls wrestling in New Jersey.
