Jang Yoon Ju Reveals Pressure to Participate in Nude Photoshoots
Model-turned-actress Jang Yoon Ju has opened up about the pressure she faced to participate in nude photoshoots early in her modeling career. In a candid video released on January 3, 2024, on her YouTube channel, Jang expressed that she had “a lot she wanted to talk about,” shedding light on her experiences in the industry.
Beginning her modeling career at the age of 18 in 1997, Jang noted that her curvier physique often led to her being directed towards nude or revealing shoots. While she complied with these demands, she admitted that many of these experiences left her feeling uncomfortable. “There were times when I really didn’t want to do it. I was pressured simply because my body was considered attractive,” she said.
Concerns from Peers
Jang recounted moments when senior models approached her with concern, questioning her choices regarding nude photoshoots at such a young age. “Some senior unnies called me over and said, ‘Yoon Ju, why do you keep doing shoots where you take your clothes off? You’re still young,’” she recalled. Their comments reflected a caring attitude, as they expressed worry for her well-being rather than judgment.
Initially, Jang viewed modeling as a form of artistic expression, believing that showcasing the body confidently could be meaningful. “I thought that as a model, shouldn’t I be doing these kinds of performances as works of art?” she explained. However, she recognized that South Korean societal norms were considerably more conservative compared to those in other countries. “Overseas, exposure is seen as a freer form of performance, but in Korea, especially when I was active, the mindset was quite different,” Jang noted.
Reflection on the Industry
Throughout her years in the modeling industry, Jang has transitioned into acting, appearing in several films and K-Dramas. Her experience highlights the complexities and challenges faced by models, particularly women, in navigating societal expectations and personal boundaries.
Jang Yoon Ju’s revelations contribute to a broader conversation about the pressures within the modeling industry, especially regarding body image and the expectations placed on young women. By sharing her story, Jang aims to encourage others to reflect on these issues and consider the implications of such pressures in artistic fields.
