Gwyneth Paltrow Discusses Turning Down Intimate Scene with Ethan Hawke
Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened up about a pivotal moment in her early career, revealing that she turned down a proposed sex scene with actor Ethan Hawke in the 1998 film Great Expectations. In a conversation for Vanity Fair, the 53-year-old actress and the 55-year-old actor reflected on their experiences while promoting the film nearly three decades later.
During their discussion, Hawke prompted Paltrow to recall the intimate scene pitched by director Alfonso Cuarón. He described a moment where Hawke’s character would engage in a sexual act with Paltrow’s character, which she vividly remembered as a source of anxiety. Paltrow stated, “Oh my god, my father’s going to have a heart attack,” highlighting her concerns about how such a scene would be perceived by her family.
Hawke humorously mimicked Cuarón’s vision for the scene: “The camera is going to go down your belly, and then it’s going to go up your breasts, and then it’s going to go in your face as you reach ecstasy. And then when you reach ecstasy, the light will explode like the sun!” This recollection underscored the stark contrast between their youthful ambitions and the realities of the film industry.
Paltrow, reflecting on her decision, admitted that she felt “self-conscious” about the implications of such a scene early in her career. She expressed how the thought of her father and grandfather witnessing her in that context was particularly troubling. “It really bothered me,” she noted, adding that her perspective would be different now, stating, “Now, I wouldn’t care.”
Hawke praised Paltrow’s decision-making at the time. He acknowledged her understanding of the film industry and the potential impact such images could have on her family. “You had an awareness of the way that the business works, and the ways in which those kinds of images could be manipulated and what it meant to your dad,” he remarked.
In a separate event, Paltrow made her first red carpet appearance with both of her children, Apple and Moses Martin, at the New York premiere of Marty Supreme. This appearance marked a significant moment for the actress, showcasing her evolving role as a mother in the public eye.
Paltrow’s candid reflections on her early career decisions highlight the pressures faced by young actors navigating their personal and professional lives. As she continues to evolve in her career, her insights offer a glimpse into the complex dynamics of fame, family, and personal choice in the entertainment industry.
