Jeremy Renner’s Zombie Sequel Finds Streaming Home on Hulu
The sequel to the acclaimed zombie film, 28 Weeks Later, featuring Jeremy Renner, has secured a streaming release on Hulu. Set to premiere in January 2026, the film continues the storyline established in the original 28 Days Later and its follow-up, which have significantly influenced the horror genre over the past two decades.
Originally directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later takes place six months after the outbreak of the Rage virus in Britain. The narrative follows the return of refugees, including Don and his two children, as they attempt to rebuild their lives in a country deemed safe. Chaos ensues when the children venture out to locate their mother, inadvertently reintroducing the virus that leads to a new wave of devastation.
The film was well-received upon its release in 2007, grossing over $72 million worldwide against a budget of $15 million. Critical reception was generally positive, with a 73% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, while audience feedback yielded a score of 66%. While many praised the film’s pacing and immersive handheld cinematography, some critiques noted an emphasis on visual spectacle over character development.
Franchise Expansion and Future Installments
The legacy of the 28 Days Later franchise continues to evolve. In 2025, Danny Boyle introduced a new chapter titled 28 Years Later, which garnered acclaim for its fresh perspective on the zombie apocalypse. Written by Alex Garland, this installment features a new ensemble cast including Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes. The film achieved significant box office success, earning $151 million globally with a production budget of $60 million, alongside a 89% critics rating and a 63% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Following this success, the franchise is set to expand further with a sequel titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, directed by Nia DaCosta and scheduled for release in January 2026. This film was shot concurrently with 28 Years Later and also penned by Garland. Additionally, a third film in the saga is being developed by Sony, with speculation that Cillian Murphy may reprise his role, highlighting the studio’s confidence in the franchise’s continued popularity.
As the franchise continues to grow, fans of the original films can expect further exploration of the Rage virus narrative and its impact on humanity.
