Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner Omitted from NYT Tribute
The New York Times Magazine’s annual “Lives They Lived” tribute for 2025 notably excluded renowned filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner. Their absence has sparked considerable speculation regarding the reasons behind it, especially given the tragic circumstances surrounding their deaths just days before the publication was finalized.
The couple passed away on December 14, 2025, in their Brentwood home, where they were discovered by their daughter, Romy Reiner. Initial reports indicate that both suffered multiple knife wounds. Following the incident, police arrested their youngest son, Nick Reiner, who has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He is currently in custody without bail and faces a hearing scheduled for January 7, 2026.
The omission of the Reiners from the tribute raised questions among fans and colleagues alike. Some speculated that the graphic nature of their deaths could have led to their exclusion. Others pointed to a heartfelt opinion piece by filmmaker Martin Scorsese, published on Christmas Day, which reflected on his friendship with Reiner, suggesting it might serve as a tribute of its own.
However, the true reason for their absence appears to be more logistical than personal. According to Danielle Rhoades Ha, Senior Vice President of Communications for The New York Times, the “Lives They Lived” segment had already been finalized for publication on December 11, 2025, just three days before the Reiners’ deaths. The timing, therefore, was coincidental rather than a deliberate oversight.
Despite the tribute’s print date of December 16, the content had already been sent for publication. This has led to discussions about the editorial process and the challenges of honoring individuals who pass away just before a publication deadline.
The Reiners were beloved figures in the entertainment industry, with a legacy that includes influential works such as “This Is Spinal Tap” and “A Few Good Men.” Their contributions to film and television have resonated with audiences worldwide, making their absence from the tribute all the more notable.
As the investigation into their deaths continues, the community mourns not only the loss of two cherished individuals but also grapples with the circumstances that led to such a tragic end. The fallout from these events has opened a dialogue on the complexities surrounding public tributes and how timing can affect the remembrance of significant figures in society.
Subsequent coverage of this incident will likely explore the implications for the Reiners’ family and the broader entertainment industry as they navigate this profound loss.
