Lake City Council Prioritizes Future Goals Following Audit Report
LAKE CITY, SC – In a special meeting held on March 3, 2024, the Lake City Council established key goals for the city’s future in response to a recent forensic audit report. The session, aimed at fostering trust and communication within the council, was facilitated by Charlie Barrineau from the Municipal Association of South Carolina.
During the first portion of the gathering, council members engaged in activities designed to enhance their collaborative skills. “A lot of the things going on in the city are at our hands,” stated Mayor Yamekia Robinson. She emphasized the necessity for clear thinking and teamwork among council members to effectively address the city’s challenges.
Following the trust-building exercises, Barrineau guided the council in identifying and ranking their top priorities. Each member contributed ideas, resulting in a comprehensive list that was subsequently narrowed down to three primary goals for 2026: stabilizing basic services and building reserves, enhancing financial oversight, and improving public works.
“It was very productive and much needed,” Robinson noted, reflecting on the significance of the meeting. The emphasis on financial oversight stems from the findings of the forensic audit report, which revealed concerning financial losses and spending practices within the city.
City Administrator Malik Whitaker expressed his enthusiasm for the council’s consensus on prioritizing financial stability and reserve building. “Knowing the council’s shared goals will be helpful in moving forward with planning and decision-making,” he remarked. Whitaker indicated that these goals would guide the budgeting process and the development of the city’s work plan.
“This is what people can use to hold us accountable for the work we’ll be doing in the upcoming fiscal year,” he added. Plans are now in place to formalize these goals as resolutions for the city.
The council’s proactive approach marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges highlighted in the forensic audit report and sets a clear direction for Lake City’s future.
