A tragic snowmobile accident in Washburn, Maine, resulted in the death of a 17-year-old girl on Saturday, March 16, 2024. According to the Maine Warden Service, the incident occurred shortly after 13:00 local time on Story Street. The girl was riding as a passenger on a snowmobile driven by a 17-year-old boy when the vehicle lost control.
The snowmobile was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when it failed to navigate a 90-degree turn on the road. The vehicle struck a curb, flipped over, and ejected both teenagers. Following the crash, the snowmobile and the two riders collided with the side of a nearby house.
Mark Latti, a spokesperson for the Maine Warden Service, confirmed that the girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver sustained multiple injuries and was initially transported to Cary Medical Center in Caribou, before being transferred to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for further treatment.
Both teenagers were wearing helmets at the time of the accident, which authorities hope will raise awareness about safety measures in snowmobiling. The names of the individuals involved have not been released, as the incident is still under investigation by the Maine Warden Service.
Emergency responders from Presque Isle EMS, Presque Isle Fire and Rescue, and the Presque Isle Police Department were present at the scene to assist with the aftermath of the crash.
The Warden Service continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, aiming to gather more information on the factors that led to this tragic event. Community members are left to mourn the loss of a young life while grappling with the implications of snowmobile safety in the region.
