Pistons’ J.B. Bickerstaff Strategizes Jaden Ivey’s Return to Full Minutes
The Detroit Pistons secured a 136-127 victory against the Sacramento Kings, showcasing the potential of Jaden Ivey as he continues to recover from injuries. Ivey, who recently returned to the lineup, demonstrated his explosive skills with a highlight play during the game, finishing a fast break with a right-handed layup over Kings guard DeMar DeRozan. Despite this promising performance, Ivey logged only 14 minutes on the court.
Ivey’s return to the Pistons comes after a challenging period marked by a broken left fibula and a right knee injury sustained over nine months. Currently, he is under a 15-minute restriction as part of his recovery plan. Coach J.B. Bickerstaff has emphasized a cautious approach to managing Ivey’s playing time, focusing on his comfort level and overall performance.
“We have a plan in place for him to ramp up, and to ramp up where he is comfortable and confident,” Bickerstaff stated. This strategy is crucial as Ivey looks to regain his full capacity, which included averaging 30.0 minutes per game as a starter in his first three seasons. This season, however, he has transitioned to a bench role, averaging just 15.0 minutes per game.
Since his return on November 22, Ivey has played in 16 games, averaging 8.2 points with a shooting percentage of 48%. His most notable performance since returning occurred on December 15, 2023, when he played a season-high 20 minutes against the Boston Celtics, contributing 10 points, three assists, and three rebounds.
Bickerstaff attributes the limited minutes for Ivey to the team’s depth, which allows for a balanced approach as they reintegrate players who have been sidelined by injuries. “We are in a great situation with the amount of guys we have on the floor and the successes we have been able to have,” he noted, highlighting the importance of maintaining team continuity while managing player health.
As Ivey continues to show signs of his previous form, including his recent performance against the Kings, it is likely that the Pistons will increase his playing time. The team’s focus remains on ensuring Ivey’s return to full strength while also utilizing their roster effectively to compete in the league. If he can maintain or build upon his recent performances, fans can expect to see Ivey playing a greater role in the team’s future games.
