Nickeil Alexander-Walker Thrives in Atlanta, But at What Cost?
Nickeil Alexander-Walker is making a significant impact for the Atlanta Hawks this season, averaging over 20 points per game, a notable increase from his time with the Minnesota Timberwolves. His offensive production has soared, raising questions about why such performance did not materialize during his two seasons in Minnesota. The answer largely lies in his role on the team.
While in Minnesota, Alexander-Walker primarily played as the seventh man, limiting his opportunities. In contrast, he has started most games for Atlanta due to injuries to star guard Trae Young. Consequently, Alexander-Walker is logging an average of 32.8 minutes per game, significantly more than the 25.8 minutes he averaged last season with the Timberwolves.
His role change has allowed him to take on greater offensive responsibilities. Currently, he ranks second on the Hawks in both points, averaging 20.6, and field-goal attempts, with 15.7 per game. This level of shooting was unattainable in Minnesota, where he contended with talented teammates such as Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle, and Karl-Anthony Towns.
Basketball is inherently a role-driven sport, and Alexander-Walker’s circumstances have undoubtedly influenced his output. Atlanta’s need for high-volume scoring contrasts sharply with Minnesota’s roster, which did not require such contributions from him. His well-deserved four-year, $60 million deal with Atlanta, completed via sign-and-trade, reflects this shift and the Wolves’ inability to match the offer due to salary cap constraints.
While commendable, Alexander-Walker’s increased scoring does not necessarily indicate that he has reached his full potential as a two-way player. His defensive contributions, particularly his perimeter defense, have been sorely missed in Minnesota. His high level of compete and defensive tenacity earned him a place in the Timberwolves’ rotation and contributed to his growing role.
The Timberwolves have shown vulnerabilities on defense this season, often appearing short on capable on-ball defenders. This inconsistency has made it challenging for them to replace Alexander-Walker’s contributions off the bench. If he were to return to the same role he occupied last season, the Wolves would likely see immediate improvement.
In contrast, Alexander-Walker’s defensive performance has not matched his offensive surge while with the Hawks. Atlanta currently ranks 19th in defensive rating, slightly worse than their 18th place finish last year. Opponents are shooting 53.8% when guarded by Alexander-Walker this season, a stark contrast to the under 50% shooting they managed against him in the previous two years.
According to the basketball analytics site Dunks and Threes, Alexander-Walker’s offensive impact is in the 86th percentile, but his defensive impact has dropped to the 71st percentile, down from the 88th and 95th percentile rankings he achieved in Minnesota. Other advanced metrics confirm this decline, showing a decrease in his value over a replacement player and wins above replacement per 48 minutes.
Despite his impressive scoring feats, which include eight games this month where he scored over 20 points, the Hawks are struggling, losing all eight of those contests. This correlation suggests that while Alexander-Walker is stepping up offensively, it may come at the expense of his defensive performance.
With the Hawks entering their New Year’s Eve match against the Timberwolves with a 15-19 record, questions linger about whether Atlanta can maintain success while relying heavily on Alexander-Walker for offensive contributions. His growth as an offensive player is evident, but his elite qualities in the NBA are deeply rooted in his defensive abilities.
As both teams navigate their seasons, the relationship between Alexander-Walker’s offensive responsibilities and his defensive effectiveness will remain critical in assessing his overall impact on both the Hawks and Timberwolves.
