Exciting Year Ahead for Brandon Sanderson Fans with New Releases
Fans of Brandon Sanderson can anticipate a thrilling year in 2026, marked by several new book releases and exciting projects. In a comprehensive end-of-year update, Sanderson shared significant information about upcoming works, including two major novels and various adaptations in development. This update, known as the annual State of Sanderson, serves as a detailed overview of his plans and projects, aimed at keeping fans informed about his creative endeavors.
New Novels Set for Release
Sanderson has confirmed the release of two highly awaited novels in 2026: The Fires of December and Blightfall. The Fires of December is a standalone installment within the expansive Cosmere universe, set to be available commercially in December 2026. A premium edition will be offered through a crowdfunding campaign launching in March 2026.
Blightfall, co-authored with Janci Patterson, marks the first entry in a new series titled Riftwake. This new series is a follow-up to Sanderson’s popular Skyward Saga, with plans for three novels in total. While the second installment is reportedly complete, specifics regarding its release remain unconfirmed.
Additionally, fans can look forward to a new collection of Hoid’s Storybooks, illustrated by Howard Lyon. This collection, which includes titles like The Dog and the Dragon and Wandersail, is also part of the crowdfunding campaign set to launch in March.
Adaptations and Crowdfunding Initiatives
In addition to the new literary works, Sanderson is exploring various adaptations for film and video games. The author has initiated discussions with major video game developers to bring a Mistborn game to fruition, a project fans have been eagerly awaiting. Moreover, he plans to launch another extensive crowdfunding campaign this summer, collaborating with Brotherwise on a role-playing game (RPG) that will follow the successful Stormlight game released in November 2025.
On the film and television front, Sanderson mentioned that he is engaging with studio executives about potential projects. A pilot for a Skyward television series is already in development, and there are promising developments regarding a possible film adaptation of either Mistborn or Stormlight. While progress on these projects remains tentative, Sanderson’s shift in discussions to higher-level studio executives indicates increased momentum.
