Valor Christian High School’s cheer and poms teams achieved remarkable success at the Division II national championships held at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, last month. Competing against strong contenders, both teams showcased their dedication and talent, securing top placements in their respective categories.

Cheer Team Triumphs in Orlando

The Valor cheer team delivered impressive performances in the Universal Cheer Association’s competition, excelling in both game day and traditional routines. The team clinched first place in the super varsity game day, non-tumbling category, while also earning third place in the traditional routine. Coach and dean of students Kallyn Connor emphasized the commitment and trust that propelled the team to nationals. “Getting to nationals took a lot of hard work, commitment and trust in each other as a team,” she noted.

The journey to the national level began with successful qualifications in Minnesota and Denver. The competitions took place from January 31 to February 2, 2024. Reflecting on the game day routine, Coach Connor remarked, “Every part of the routine required precision, strength and confidence, especially knowing one mistake could affect the whole team. We tried to focus on being our version of ‘perfect’ and not focus on anyone else. In the end, ‘our perfect’ ended up being perfect.” This victory was particularly significant for the team, as it marked their first championship win after finishing second seven times in previous competitions.

In the traditional category, Valor cheer competed in the large varsity intermediate non-tumbling division, which included stunts, jumps, pyramids, and dance. Coach Connor expressed pride in the athletes’ growth, stating, “The most rewarding part has been watching the girls grow—not just as athletes, but as confident young women. Seeing them learn to trust each other, push past self-doubt, and show up for one another has been incredibly fulfilling.”

Poms Team Shines with Silver Medals

The Valor poms team also made a strong showing, earning silver at the Division II competition organized by the Universal Dance Association. Competing alongside 24 teams, they claimed second place in the small varsity DII game day category. Additionally, they secured seventh place in small varsity DII pom and eighth place in small varsity DII jazz, competing against a total of 40 and 38 teams, respectively.

Pom coach Nicole Toscano highlighted the unity and support within the team as key elements of their success. “Even when faced with mental, physical or emotional challenges, we never stopped showing up for one another,” Toscano stated. “Every single girl uplifted the others, pushed them to be their best, celebrated each others’ victories and grew together in faith. More than anything, I am proud of the heart we carried with us all year long.”

The achievements of both teams at the national championships reflect not only their athletic prowess but also their commitment to teamwork and personal growth. As they return from Orlando, the Valor Christian High School cheer and poms teams have left a lasting mark on the national stage, celebrating victories that go beyond medals and trophies.
