Sioux Falls Instructor Named 2026 Teacher of the Year
Rickie McCaulsky, a dedicated educator at the Career and Technical Education Academy, has been recognized as the 2026 Dr. John W. Harris Teacher of the Year. The announcement was made on March 6, 2026, during a ceremony held at the Sanford Barn in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. This prestigious award, presented by Vern Eide Motorcars, includes a monetary prize of $4,000.
As an Automotive and Diesel Mechanics Instructor, Mr. McCaulsky brings over 14 years of experience within the Sioux Falls School District. His background as a 24-year U.S. Army veteran and former Instructor Coordinator of Maintenance Training significantly enriches his teaching approach. He instills a sense of discipline and pride in his students, fostering an environment conducive to learning.
Innovative Teaching Methods and Industry Partnerships
Mr. McCaulsky’s teaching philosophy emphasizes self-assessment, problem-solving, and confidence, essential skills for aspiring professionals in the automotive industry. His classroom is characterized by hands-on projects such as engine rebuilding and performance diagnosis, which provide students with practical experience. By aligning his program with industry standards, he ensures that students are well-prepared for their future careers.
Furthermore, McCaulsky actively collaborates with local businesses to provide students with access to modern equipment and clear pathways to further education. This commitment not only enhances the quality of education but also strengthens the connection between students and potential employers.
In addition to Mr. McCaulsky, four other educators were recognized as finalists for the 2026 Teacher of the Year award. They included:

– Shayla Kruse, a 7th Grade Science Teacher at George McGovern Middle School
– Adrian Ledesma, a 1st Grade Teacher at Sonia Sotomayor Elementary
Each finalist received a prize of $1,000 from the Sioux Falls Public Schools Education Foundation, highlighting the district’s commitment to recognizing excellence in education.
