Inventive Creator Converts Parking Meter into Raspberry Pi Jukebox
A creative individual has transformed a decommissioned parking meter into a functional jukebox using a Raspberry Pi, showcasing an inventive approach to repurposing discarded objects. This unique project, shared on the Raspberry Pi subreddit by user Connect_Use2528, combines technology and artistry, breathing new life into an otherwise obsolete item.
The journey began when the creator’s wife suggested repainting the old parking meter, which had been gathering dust in their garage. After applying a vibrant coat of baby pink, the creator decided to take the project a step further by integrating music playback capabilities. They dismantled the meter, installed a speaker, and incorporated a Raspberry Pi Zero to facilitate music streaming.
To control the jukebox, the creator ingeniously utilized the parking meter’s credit card payment slot, converting it into an RFID card reader. This allows users to play specific playlists simply by scanning the cards. Each card serves a unique purpose, including volume adjustments and track skipping. The system operates without the need for coins, making it user-friendly and innovative.
Design and Functionality of the Jukebox
The project features a small OLED screen, providing real-time information about the currently playing track. This screen is located on the back of the meter, where a solar panel was originally situated. The creator opted to design the RFID cards to resemble credit cards, enhancing the overall aesthetic and usability of the jukebox. Each card includes a graphic and a description, allowing users to select their music based on visual appeal.
Some of the themed card examples include “Butt Rock for Women,” “Butt Rock for Men,” and “Peter the Parking Meter: Baby Pink Uprising.” This playful approach adds a layer of personality to the jukebox, making it an engaging experience for users.
While the creator successfully assembled the jukebox, they acknowledged room for improvement. Initially, they intended to include an encoder toggle for additional control, but it proved challenging to fit within the parking meter’s housing. Future iterations may incorporate this feature along with other enhancements.
Creative Uses for Raspberry Pi
This inventive project highlights the potential of the Raspberry Pi as a versatile tool for DIY enthusiasts. For those without access to a spare parking meter, there are numerous other creative ways to utilize a Raspberry Pi. The community continues to share innovative projects, providing inspiration for anyone looking to explore technology and craftsmanship.
In conclusion, the transformation of a parking meter into a Raspberry Pi jukebox serves as a testament to human creativity and resourcefulness. By combining technology with a touch of flair, this project not only revitalizes a discarded item but also offers a unique way to enjoy music.
