Deb Conklin’s $2.5 Million Gift Transforms Clemson University
Deb Conklin, a graduate of Clemson University, has made a substantial gift of $2.5 million as part of the school’s ONE Clemson Cornerstone initiative. This donation aims to enhance key areas such as athletics, alumni engagement, and student success, significantly impacting the university’s future.
Conklin, who graduated in 1992 with a degree in industrial engineering, has always felt a strong connection to Clemson. Although she did not take on a prominent alumni role immediately after graduation, her commitment to the university deepened over time. A pivotal moment came during a conversation with friends at a tailgate, where she reflected on her experiences and asked how she could encourage more students to attend Clemson. This prompted her to engage more actively with the Clemson Alumni Association and understand the impact she could have on future generations.
Her journey has been shaped by the opportunities that Clemson provided her, particularly through scholarships. Conklin acknowledges that financial support was crucial in enabling her to pursue her education. She stated, “Clemson shaped who I am — not just professionally, but personally. My hope is that this gift helps ensure future Tigers have the same support, access, and pride that made such a difference in my life.”
Enhancing Women’s Athletics and Student Opportunities
Conklin’s donation will specifically support the development of dedicated facilities for women’s lacrosse, demonstrating her commitment to equity in athletics. As a lifelong sports enthusiast, she believes that participation in sports fosters essential life skills such as confidence and teamwork.
Davis Babb, CEO of IPTAY, remarked on the significance of Conklin’s investment, stating, “This gift accelerates our ability to provide elite competitive experiences and state-of-the-art facilities.” The facilities will be designed to support the growth of the women’s lacrosse program, which Conklin sees as having great potential for national prominence.
In recognition of her generosity, the stadium at the Clemson Lacrosse Complex will be named Conklin Field. This tribute serves as a lasting acknowledgment of her commitment to empowering student-athletes at Clemson.
Conklin’s gift also establishes the Deb Conklin Endowment with the Clemson Alumni Association, dedicated to sustaining the Clemson Ring Ceremony. For many alumni, the ring symbolizes perseverance and a lifelong bond with the university. Her earlier contributions included naming the Conklin Ring Gallery, which features an interactive display where alumni can scan their rings and contribute to a digital archive.
Supporting Student Scholarships and Future Generations
Additionally, Conklin’s donation includes funding for the James Conklin Scholarship Endowment, named in honor of her father. This endowment aims to provide financial support for students, particularly those whose parents have disabilities. This initiative reflects the Conklin family’s ongoing commitment to access and opportunity for all students.
Conklin expressed her desire to ease the financial burden for students facing additional challenges, saying, “Scholarships open doors, alumni programming sustains lifelong connections, and programs like women’s lacrosse build teamwork and resilience.”
The Cornerstone Program at Clemson recognizes philanthropic contributions of $2.5 million or more, highlighting the importance of alumni and supporters in shaping the university’s future. Cheri Phyfer, a trustee and campaign chair, noted the impact of Conklin’s gift on the campaign entitled “Fiercely Forward,” stating, “We are incredibly grateful for Deb’s steadfast belief in our mission.”
Conklin’s multifaceted commitment not only enhances the athletic facilities and supports student scholarships but also fosters a culture of belonging and shared purpose at Clemson. Her contributions are set to create lasting change in the university community, ensuring that future generations of Tigers can benefit from the same opportunities that shaped her life.
