The **Walk for Peace**, a journey undertaken by a group of Buddhist monks, is making its way through Georgia on Saturday, January 3. As part of their mission to promote peace, compassion, and loving kindness, the monks will stop for the night in **Oglethorpe County** after traversing the heart of **Oconee County**. This marks the 70th day of their ambitious **2,300-mile** trek from **Fort Worth, Texas**, to **Washington, D.C.**

Beginning their day in **Good Hope**, the monks planned to walk through **Bishop** and **Watkinsville**. However, due to a change in their route, they will head further south than initially anticipated, bypassing **Athens** in favor of **Columbia, South Carolina**. The monks paused for lunch at the **Bishop Community Center** before continuing their journey.

Details of the Planned Route

Following lunch, the monks are expected to reach Watkinsville around **14:30**. According to the city’s social media announcement, the community is honored to host the monks as they pass through. “The Walk for Peace is expected to pass through our community today between approximately **2:30 PM** and **5 PM**, though the exact time and route may change,” the statement read.

The updated route indicates that the monks will walk north along **Old Bishop Road**, then turn onto **South Main Street**, followed by a right onto **McRee Street** and **Depot Street**. They will proceed right onto **Barnett Shoals**, which becomes **Bob Godfrey Road**, and eventually lead to **Wolfskin Road**.

Resting for the Night

After their day of walking, the monks will stay overnight at the **Oak Ridge Lodge** located at **33 Oak Ridge Trail, Arnoldsville, GA 30619**. The lodge welcomes visitors from **18:00** to **21:00**, inviting community members to join and support the monks during their stay.

This **Walk for Peace** initiative is a significant undertaking, spanning **120 days** and covering approximately **2,300 miles**. The monks have received widespread support throughout their journey, with many individuals sharing photos and videos on social media, as well as offering gifts along the way.

The monks’ trek aims to inspire goodwill and foster a sense of community, with their next planned march continuing through Oglethorpe County towards **Lincolnton**. This peaceful initiative highlights the monks’ commitment to spreading messages of harmony across the states they traverse.
