St. James Hospital Achieves Reverifying Status as Trauma Center
Intermountain Health St. James Hospital in Butte, Montana, has been reverified as a Level III Trauma Center, affirming its commitment to delivering high-quality care for injured patients. This recognition comes from the Verification Review Committee, an ad hoc panel associated with the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons. The hospital’s new status was confirmed on September 22, 2025, following a rigorous assessment of its trauma care capabilities.
To maintain its designation as a verified trauma center, St. James Hospital must meet strict criteria that ensure the adequacy of trauma care and institutional performance. The verification signifies the hospital’s ability to provide essential services, including prompt assessment, resuscitation, surgical interventions, intensive care, and stabilization for injured patients. Additionally, the facility offers 24-hour immediate coverage by emergency medicine physicians, along with quick access to general surgeons and anesthesiologists.
According to Dr. Jason Johnson, the trauma medical director at St. James, the importance of Level III trauma centers in Montana cannot be overstated, particularly in rural areas. “We are positioned to provide life-saving care in a geographically isolated location,” he stated. Dr. Johnson emphasized that the hospital can also deliver limited prolonged care for critically injured patients while they await transport to higher-level facilities. “The most important thing is that rural community members have faster access to life-saving intervention,” he added.
The reverification aligns with St. James’ designation as a Montana Area Trauma Hospital by the Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services’ State Trauma Care Committee. This designation further reinforces the hospital’s critical role in the region’s healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that residents have access to necessary trauma services.
St. James Hospital’s commitment to trauma care highlights the essential role such facilities play in the healthcare landscape, especially in rural communities where immediate access to specialized medical attention can significantly affect patient outcomes. The hospital continues to strive for excellence in trauma care, reflecting its dedication to the well-being of its patients and the broader community.
