Major Cookie and Chocolate Product Recalls Prompt Consumer Alerts
Multiple chocolate and cookie products have been recalled across several states due to undeclared allergens, raising concerns for consumers during the busy holiday season. The recalls, announced on December 23, 2023, involve products from three companies: Gregory’s Foods, Inc., Atwater’s, and Willy Pete’s Chocolate Company LLC.
Gregory’s Foods, Inc., based in Minnesota, is recalling its “Bag Full of Cookies” White Chocolate Macadamia Nut frozen cookie dough, packaged in 2-pound 8.5-ounce units. The company reported that some batches of this product contain undeclared peanuts, which could pose serious health risks for individuals with peanut allergies. The announcement highlights the importance of clear labeling, especially during a time when many consumers purchase baked goods for holiday gatherings.
In Maryland, Atwater’s is also recalling 197 cookie tins that contain undeclared tree nuts. The company’s announcement, published by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), emphasizes the potential dangers of consuming products without proper allergen disclosures. Consumers who have purchased these tins are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
In Connecticut, Willy Pete’s Chocolate Company LLC is pulling its Almond Despair chocolate bars from shelves due to similar concerns about undeclared allergens. This recall further underscores the critical need for food manufacturers to ensure accurate labeling and safety for their products.
Consumer Guidance and Safety Measures
The FDA provides guidance for consumers regarding these recalls, recommending that anyone who has purchased the affected products should not consume them. Instead, they should discard the items or return them to the retailer. The agency is also working with the companies involved to ensure that these issues are addressed and that consumers are kept informed of any further developments.
Recalls like these serve as a reminder of the importance of allergen awareness in food products. Undeclared allergens can lead to severe allergic reactions, which may require immediate medical attention. Manufacturers are urged to implement stringent quality control measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
As the holiday season continues, consumers are encouraged to check their pantries for the recalled items and stay updated with information from the FDA and other credible sources regarding food safety.
