Affordable IVF Alternative Offers New Hope for Couples
Approximately ten percent of couples globally face challenges with infertility, leading many to explore alternatives to conventional treatments like in vitro fertilization (IVF). One such alternative is restorative reproductive medicine (RRM), which aims to identify and address the root causes of infertility rather than relying solely on IVF. This approach has gained attention as an affordable and effective option for couples struggling to conceive.
Karen and Anthony Monetti, a couple from the United States, exemplify the journey many face in their quest for parenthood. After nine years of marriage, they felt a strong spiritual calling to become parents. “Put it in God’s hands,” Anthony told CBN News, a sentiment echoed by Karen. “And we got pregnant pretty fast.” Unfortunately, their journey soon took a heartbreaking turn as they endured four miscarriages.
“Nothing has hurt, and I’ve never grieved so much as the infertility journey,” Karen expressed. Faced with the suggestion of IVF by their hematologist, the couple chose a different path. “We flat out said, ‘We’re not doing it. This is all in God’s hands. He will take care of us,'” Karen recalled. She felt uncomfortable with the idea of having multiple embryos frozen, stating, “I could not bring myself to that, knowing that there was life there that was not inside of me.”
Understanding Restorative Reproductive Medicine
Dr. Golden-Tevald, a leading expert in RRM, highlighted the thorough evaluation process involved. “In 20 years of doing this, I have never had a woman who we evaluated that we came up and said, ‘We can’t find anything wrong,'” he said. The process typically begins with an extensive assessment of a woman’s ovulation cycle and hormonal levels.
Karen underwent numerous tests designed to identify potential issues contributing to infertility. “It was a lot of testing,” she recalled. Men are also evaluated, as low testosterone levels can impact sperm function and counts. “There’s usually multiple factors,” Dr. Golden-Tevald noted, emphasizing the complexity of infertility.
In the Monetti’s case, Karen faced significant health challenges, including blood clots and hormonal imbalances. After beginning treatment with blood thinners and hormone therapy, the couple’s hopes soared. Their determination was rewarded when Karen gave birth to a healthy baby girl, whom they refer to as their miracle. “My pregnancy was a huge success,” she stated.
RRM’s Growing Recognition
Doctors involved in restorative reproductive medicine assert that the success rate of RRM is comparable to or even exceeds that of IVF. “The other piece is that there’s really no risk, and it’s really inexpensive too,” Dr. Fleming explained. Despite these advantages, RRM remains relatively obscure, often overshadowed by the mainstream promotion of IVF.
Karen believes that many couples remain unaware of RRM’s existence. “I think RRM is not talked about in mainstream medical practices,” she said. Dr. Fleming echoed her sentiments, citing a lack of financial incentive for practitioners to recommend RRM over IVF. “Unfortunately, RRM is not very well known… there’s not a lot of money to be gained in RRM,” he stated.
As the new Senate prepares to consider the RESTORE Act, advocates for RRM are relying on personal recommendations to spread awareness. Karen has been enthusiastic in sharing her story, frequently passing along contact information for Dr. Eddie and Dr. Jean, the specialists who guided her journey. “I’ve given out their information because, again, God gave them to us, and they are incredible,” she remarked.
The Monettis’ experience underscores the potential for restorative reproductive medicine to offer hope to couples navigating the often painful path of infertility. With increasing recognition and advocacy, RRM may soon emerge as a viable alternative for those seeking to build their families.
