Harry and Meghan’s Publicist Resigns Amid PR Controversies
Meredith Maines, the publicist representing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, has resigned after a tumultuous ten-month tenure marked by multiple public relations controversies. Her departure has raised eyebrows, with many questioning the couple’s claim that the decision was amicable and based on a successful conclusion of her role.
Reports indicate that Maines, the couple’s 11th publicist in five years, faced significant challenges during her brief time with them. According to Tom Sykes, European editor at the Daily Beast, the couple’s reputation has deteriorated sharply in 2025, leading to claims that Maines’ tenure was a “disaster.” Sources close to the situation suggest that Maines may have chosen to leave to preserve her professional reputation before further issues arise.
The breaking point for Maines reportedly stemmed from a public relations debacle surrounding Harry and Meghan’s attendance at the 70th birthday party of Kris Jenner, matriarch of the Kardashian family. The event, held at the Beverly Hills home of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, became infamous when the couple allegedly requested the removal of photos featuring them from social media. Initial reports suggested they had signed “no photo” agreements, but conflicting accounts emerged, complicating the narrative.
The fallout from this incident led to speculation that Maines resigned due to the damage caused by the public relations misstep. Although she initially denied any immediate plans to leave, claiming she would assist with the transition over the holidays, the timing of her resignation raises questions about the circumstances surrounding it.
Since stepping back from royal duties and relocating to California in 2020, Harry and Meghan have sought to redefine their public image as global thought leaders and philanthropists. Their efforts were initially buoyed by lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, but those partnerships have since ended. The couple’s attempts at reinvention have often been overshadowed by a series of self-inflicted controversies, contributing to a declining public image.
2025 was intended to be a significant year for Meghan, who aimed to establish herself as a lifestyle influencer akin to Gwyneth Paltrow or Martha Stewart. However, the year began on a challenging note when the couple was criticized for their perceived insensitivity during wildfire disasters in California. Their subsequent public appearances and media engagements have faced intense scrutiny, including allegations of a toxic work environment.
Despite Maines’ impressive background, which includes degrees from Stanford University and experience with prominent companies like Google and Hulu, the challenges of managing Harry and Meghan’s public relations became evident. Sykes highlighted the difficulties faced by publicists when clients refuse to accept counsel or push for misleading narratives. He stated, “The nightmare for any publicist is the moment your client forces you to double down on something that is untrue.”
While Maines did manage to facilitate a meeting between Harry and his estranged father, King Charles III, aimed at reconciliation, the year concluded with the fallout from the Kardashian photo incident. Further complicating matters, Meghan faced criticism for her response to her father’s health crisis, which many perceived as lacking empathy.
Compounding these issues, Harry and Meghan recently announced cuts to staff positions at their Archewell Foundation, indicating broader financial challenges. Reports reveal that Archewell’s revenue fell dramatically, from $5.3 million in 2023 to $2.1 million in 2024, while expenses surged to $5.1 million. Critics have raised concerns that the couple’s charitable endeavors may be more about self-promotion than fulfilling their mission.
As Maines departs, her efforts to present a positive narrative reflect the challenges faced when working with high-profile clients. Sources indicate that her decision to leave was influenced by the difficult nature of her role, stating, “It was a miserable and impossible job.” The ongoing scrutiny of Harry and Meghan’s public relations strategy suggests that their challenges are far from resolved, leaving their future image in the hands of the next publicist who takes on the task.
