AACM Celebrates 60 Years of Innovation in Jazz at Roulette
The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) marked its 60th anniversary on November 14, 2023, with a vibrant celebration at Roulette Intermedium in New York City. The event featured performances from influential figures in avant-garde jazz, including Roscoe Mitchell, Chico Freeman, and George Lewis. Each artist reflected on the profound impact of the AACM on their musical journeys, showcasing the innovative spirit that has defined the organization since its inception in 1965 by Dr. Richard Muhal Abrams.
The evening commenced with a thought-provoking discussion moderated by Lewis, an esteemed AACM trombonist. He was joined by notable musicians, including vocalist Iqua Colson and percussionist Thurman Barker. Each panelist shared personal anecdotes about their experiences within the AACM and the influence of its founder.
Barker emphasized the magnetic presence of Abrams, stating, “Muhal was like a magnet; I wanted a piece of him.” This sentiment resonated throughout the evening as musicians recalled how Abrams opened new creative avenues for them. Adegoke Steve Colson, another panelist, reflected on his early days with the AACM, recalling his involvement in organizing events, saying, “This is telling me that the arts need to be independent.”
Mitchell, now 85 years old and a founding member of the AACM, shared how Abrams introduced him to the world of art. He described his experiences visiting museums and creating sketches, saying, “I found myself in a completely new environment,” where he felt welcomed to express himself freely.
The evening’s performances were diverse and showcased the rich tapestry of sounds that the AACM has nurtured. Mitchell’s solo set featured rarely-used bass and sopranino saxophones, captivating the audience with its originality. Freeman’s quartet delivered a piece inspired by Camel-walking in 5/4 time, while Myers’ group honored the late Jack DeJohnette with a moving tribute.
The atmosphere was electric as the performers explored the infinite possibilities of sound, each bringing their unique perspectives to the stage. According to the event’s description, the AACM has played a critical role in evolving music across genres and borders, establishing a significant legacy in the music world.
As the evening concluded, the impact of the AACM was palpable. The organization has not only fostered talented composers and performers but also created a community where artists can thrive. The celebration at Roulette served as a testament to the enduring influence of the AACM and its commitment to artistic innovation.
