TJ Tate Leads Marist to Historic Sectional Title Victory
Marist High School achieved a significant milestone by capturing its first sectional title since the 1980-81 season, thanks to a decisive 55-49 victory over Homewood-Flossmoor in the Class 4A Joliet West Sectional championship on March 6, 2026. Senior point guard TJ Tate played a crucial role, providing both leadership and skill, particularly during a tense third quarter.
Tate’s composure under pressure was evident when he scored a pivotal basket that halted a 12-0 run by the Vikings. “I wanted to calm things down,” Tate said. “We were starting to speed up a little bit. I just wanted to slow us down. That was a big basket. After that, we just settled down.” His efforts, along with those of his teammates, allowed Marist to regain control of the game and ultimately secure the title.
The RedHawks were led offensively by Charles Barnes, who scored 31 points, while Stephen Brown contributed 14 points and seven rebounds. Kendall Meyers added 10 points, and Tate rounded out the scoring with six points. This victory marks only the second sectional title in Marist’s history, a fact that resonates deeply with the players and the school community.
Key Moments in the Championship Game
The game unfolded dramatically, with Marist leading 43-28 at halftime. However, the Vikings fought back, narrowing the gap with a strong performance in the third quarter. Despite the pressure, Tate’s timely basket steadied the team. “That was huge,” Barnes remarked. “TJ is our floor general. We believe in him in those moments to slow the game down for us and make crucial plays.”
Tate’s ability to handle the ball and break the pressing defense of Homewood-Flossmoor proved essential in maintaining the lead. Marist did not allow the Vikings to come closer than seven points in the fourth quarter, showcasing their resilience.
Marist coach Brian Hynes praised Tate’s unique contributions. “When TJ is done with basketball, he should be a stand-up comedian,” Hynes said, highlighting Tate’s lighthearted demeanor and unshakeable confidence. “He’s one of those kids that doesn’t know how funny he is.”
Looking Ahead: Supersectional Challenges
Following their sectional triumph, Marist is set to compete in the Class 4A Illinois State Supersectional against Peoria Richwoods, scheduled for 19:00 on March 8, 2026. Richwoods advanced after a narrow 59-58 victory over Edwardsville. “This feels awesome,” Tate expressed after the game. “We haven’t won a sectional in so many years. Seeing everybody so happy, seeing everybody cry, it’s awesome. We’re not done yet.”
The RedHawks are now focused on continuing their journey, driven by the desire to add another banner to their gym, as they joked about changing the historical 1981 banner to include the current year. The players’ unity and camaraderie, exemplified by Tate’s leadership, will be critical as they move forward.
With a record of 30-5, Marist aims to build on this success and continue making history in the upcoming matches. Tate’s blend of skill, humor, and leadership has not only elevated his team’s performance but has also reinvigorated the spirit of Marist basketball.
