Former Block Employees Connect in Slack After Massive Layoffs

Following significant layoffs at Block, previously known as Square, a group of former employees has turned to an unaffiliated Slack channel to provide support and seek new job opportunities. On November 2, 2023, Block announced the dismissal of over 4,000 employees, amounting to nearly half of its workforce.

Rise of the Square Mafia

The Slack channel, aptly named “Square Mafia,” has existed since February 2016. It serves as a gathering place for former Block employees to share resources, trade memes, and offer emotional support. The channel’s community swiftly reacted to the layoffs, with one member posting a news article about the cuts accompanied by a single word: “Whoa!”

This message prompted a flurry of responses, including seven middle-finger emoji reactions and a notable 13 reactions featuring the Pokémon Psyduck, symbolizing confusion and stress. Within an hour of the layoffs being announced, at least 24 newly laid-off employees joined the channel, further expanding its membership.

As of November 6, 2023, the “Square Mafia” boasts 3,807 members. The group is invitation-only and welcomes anyone who has previously worked at Block, not just those recently laid off. Organizers of the channel have implemented a bot to facilitate questions and requests following the sudden influx of new members.

Membership guidelines are straightforward: individuals must have left Block at least once, with a warm welcome extended to those who may return in the future. Members are encouraged to use their real names to foster a sense of community.

Support and Networking in the Wake of Job Loss

Inside the channel, members actively share their LinkedIn profiles, offer job referrals, and highlight networking opportunities, such as the #whoishiring channel. Many have also inquired about their 401(k) plans, healthcare options, and procedures for returning company property.

One member, facing the challenge of being on an H-1B visa, noted the urgency of securing a new job within 60 days. They emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Let’s stay connected and help each other with referrals or leads.”

A former member of Block’s People team has stepped in to assist with inquiries and shared a Google Form for those seeking new job opportunities, showcasing the collaborative spirit of the channel.

The “Square Mafia” transcends the immediate concerns of job loss. It features various channels dedicated to interests such as coffee, games, and even popular television shows like “Survivor.” Members are intent on preserving the camaraderie and culture they enjoyed while working at Block, with channels replicating those from the official Slack workspace.

One member expressed the desire to keep the community thriving with the best elements of the original Slack experience, stating, “We’re also trying to keep the community alive with the best of what you loved from the old Slack, like #dank-memes.”

As the former Block employees navigate their next steps, the “Square Mafia” stands as a testament to the resilience and camaraderie among colleagues, fostering connections during a challenging transition period.
