84-Year-Old Linda Kemp Finds Purpose Working for Son’s Law Firm
Linda Kemp, an 84-year-old resident of Jacksonville, Florida, works part-time at her son’s law firm, helping to support herself financially. Living below the poverty line, Kemp relies on Social Security and her son’s assistance. After relocating closer to him, she is adapting to her new community while finding purpose in her job.
Kemp has experienced a rich and varied life, having raised seven children who now live across the globe. Her journey began with her first marriage, during which she had four children. Following a second common-law marriage that produced three more children, Kemp faced a significant turning point when her second husband left, leaving her to manage the household alone.
“I wasn’t the main breadwinner,” Kemp said. “I was selling some art I made, but it wasn’t enough to raise my children.” After the split, she received the house they built together, which she then sold to invest in a smaller home. This decision allowed her to navigate her finances effectively, and she continued to live comfortably despite the challenges.
Kemp pursued a degree in graphic design, combining her passion for art with a sustainable career. “I’ve always been an artist,” she explained. “I made my lifestyle very economical.” In her 50s, she enjoyed a successful stint as a graphic designer until the job came to an end.
Following retirement, Kemp remained active in her community, taking on leadership roles such as chair of the local chapter of the Sierra Club. She engaged in various community activities, including historic preservation projects and kayaking, which she described as a lovely way to stay connected.
Recently, she moved to a new home just over 100 miles away from her previous residence, transitioning to a more developed area. Her son, an attorney, invited her to join his law firm, where she now manages the mail. “It keeps me active and makes me get up and do something,” she said about her role.
Kemp works approximately 20 hours a week, focusing mainly on addressing envelopes for clients facing DUI charges. Despite living on a limited income, she appreciates the stability her job provides. “My son doesn’t ask for anything except that I work,” she noted, highlighting the supportive relationship they share.
While her living situation is secure—her son owns the home she occupies—Kemp still faces financial constraints. “I pay the utilities and need to hire someone for yard maintenance,” she explained. Her income primarily consists of her son’s payment and Social Security benefits.
Despite a recent health scare involving a vein in her wrist, Kemp maintains a positive outlook on her life. She takes seven medications daily and follows her doctors’ advice diligently. “You can’t fight Mother Nature,” she remarked, adding that her longevity is likely influenced by her mother, who lived to be 93.
Kemp enjoys the flexibility of her job, which allows her time to focus on her artistic pursuits. “I think working 20 hours a week is very comfortable for me,” she said, considering future entrepreneurial endeavors where she could be her own boss.
As she settles into her new community, Kemp is eager to become more involved and make new connections. “It feels like I just graduated from college,” she said, embracing this fresh start at 84. Her journey reflects resilience and the enduring bonds of family, illustrating how support and purpose can come at any age.
