Comedies Delight Audiences in Greater Boston This Fall
As the fall season unfolds, local theaters in the Greater Boston area are set to showcase a range of comedic productions. From musical whodunnits to original plays, audiences can expect an entertaining lineup that provides an excellent reason to stay indoors as temperatures drop.
“Murder For Two” will take the stage at the Greater Boston Stage in Stoneham from October 24 to November 9, 2023. This unique musical comedy combines elements of mystery and humor, centering around the unexpected death of the great American novelist Arthur Whitney at his surprise party. With a cast of just two actors portraying 13 characters, the show promises a fast-paced and clever homage to classic murder mysteries. The New York Times described it as an “ingenious miniature musical in the form of a snazzy vaudevillian double-act.” Tickets can be purchased online through the theater’s website.
In Chelmsford, the Playground Theatre Company has announced its first production for the 2025-2026 season: “Family Album,” written by Eloise Hoffman and directed by Donna DeWitt. Scheduled for performances on November 7-9, 2023, this one-act comedy is set in a New Hampshire cottage and follows the chaotic and humorous experiences of multiple generations of a family over several decades. With scenarios ranging from mouse invasions to game nights gone awry, this original play aims to deliver plenty of laughs. Tickets are priced at $20 and will be available at the door, where student and senior discounts will also be offered.
Another exciting addition to the fall lineup is “The Jester of Camelot,” a new play by Jack Neary and Andy Dolan, featuring a special staged reading on November 10, 2023, at 19:00 at Boston Playwright’s Theatre. This production explores the story of comedian Vaughn Meader, whose career was abruptly halted on the day of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Neary noted that Meader’s widow, Sheila, will be attending the reading, which adds a poignant touch to the event. More details regarding the casting process will be shared in the following week.
Additionally, the Ogunquit Playhouse in Maine has announced auditions for the role of Susan Waverly in its upcoming production of “White Christmas,” running from December 3 to 21, 2023, at the Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Auditions will take place by appointment only on October 25, 2023, and performers aged 10-12, regardless of race or ethnicity, are encouraged to apply. The selected child performer should possess a strong vocal ability and a flair for movement. Interested participants must bring a completed audition form along with a headshot and resume or email these documents in advance.
As the fall progresses, these theatrical offerings promise to provide joy and entertainment, inviting audiences to immerse themselves in the world of comedy and performance.
