Jets Bench Justin Fields as Coaches Criticize Offensive Strategy
New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has indicated a significant shift in the team’s strategy by announcing the benching of quarterback Justin Fields following a dismal 0-7 start to the season. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is now set to take the lead as the Jets prepare to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
During a press conference at the NFL’s annual fall meeting, Johnson expressed his disappointment with Fields, attributing much of the team’s struggles to the young quarterback’s performance. According to ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, several coaches around the league have criticized the Jets for not fully utilizing Fields’ strengths, particularly his running ability, in the first seven weeks of the season.
Coaches Weigh In on Jets’ Offensive Missteps
Fowler reported that multiple NFL coaches believe the Jets should have prioritized Fields’ running capabilities. An assistant coach who previously worked with Fields noted, “That’s what he’s most comfortable with. And then you can throw him off play-action with more success.” Fields started the season strong, with 12 rushing attempts in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but has not reached double-digit carries in any subsequent games.
The Jets’ offensive strategy has come under scrutiny, as statistics show Fields ranks 31st among qualified passers this season, with a 31.8 adjusted QBR. He also holds the lowest average in the league, recording just 140.8 passing yards per game, according to Pro Football Reference.
Despite the team’s struggles, Johnson expressed continued support for first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, acknowledging that he is the first coach in Jets history to start with seven consecutive losses. Johnson emphasized his belief that Glenn can still be a key part of the team’s turnaround efforts.
Looking Ahead: Challenges for the Jets
Fowler further elaborated on Johnson’s perspective, noting that the Jets conducted an extensive coaching search before hiring Glenn, who was one of the most sought-after candidates in the 2025 hiring cycle. While Glenn has faced challenges, including questionable decision-making, the Jets have remained competitive in many of their games. Remarkably, five of their seven losses have been by a mere 19 points, indicating that the team has potential despite its record.
However, the pressure is mounting on Glenn, as there are concerns about his ability to maintain the locker room’s morale if the Jets continue to struggle. As the NFL season progresses, the Jets face a critical juncture, especially with their upcoming match against the Bengals. According to ESPN BET, the Jets are entering this game as 6.5-point underdogs.
With the team’s future uncertain, all eyes will be on the Jets as they navigate this challenging phase and attempt to turn their season around under new leadership.
