Imperial Beach Shores Closed Due to Sewage Contamination
San Diego County health officials have announced the closure of the Imperial Beach shoreline due to sewage contamination from the nearby Tijuana River. The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality issued a statement on March 15, 2024, warning beachgoers that the ocean water may pose health risks, as it contains unsafe levels of sewage.
Officials confirmed that the Tijuana River is currently flowing into recreational waters, prompting the need for immediate action. “Ocean waters will remain closed until sampling and field observations confirm these areas are safe for water contact,” the statement emphasized.
In addition to Imperial Beach, an advisory has been issued for the Silver Strand Shoreline in Coronado. Health officials indicated that bacteria levels in this area have exceeded state health standards, further advising the public of potential health hazards associated with water contact.
Ongoing closures are also in effect for the Tijuana Slough along the shoreline from the International Border to three-quarters of a mile north of the Tijuana River mouth. Similar precautions are being taken at La Jolla Children’s Pool and La Jolla Cove, where bacteria levels have surpassed acceptable limits, as noted by local health authorities.
Members of the public seeking updates on beach advisories and closure information can visit sdbeachinfo.com or access the 24-hour hotline at 619-338-2073. The situation remains under close monitoring, with further testing planned to ensure the safety of beachgoers before any reopening decisions are made.
As the health department continues its efforts, the community is urged to stay informed and heed warnings to avoid potential health risks associated with water contamination.
