San Jose State Students Revive Beloved Penguin Flight Display
A group of engineering students from San Jose State University has revitalized a cherished holiday display, ensuring its return to the annual Christmas in the Park event. The project, known as “Penguin Flight School,” features animatronic penguins that glide down from the sky, bringing joy to both children and adults alike.
The display, which has been a whimsical highlight of the holiday season at Plaza de Cesar Chavez, had been absent for the last few years due to deterioration. Aiming to restore the magic of this beloved exhibit, seniors Derek Do, Cesar Jair Romero Callejas, Daniel Jimenez Hernandez, Mark Bennett, and Zachary McGee collaborated with Christmas in the Park Program Manager Keith Peffer to innovate a new version of the display.
The students replaced the outdated plush penguins with new fiberglass figures designed to flap their wings as they descend on tiny parachutes. This creative endeavor began at the start of the year and involved extensive problem-solving and engineering skills. Peffer noted that the students had to source parts online and utilize 3D printing to bring their vision to life.
Collaboration and Future Plans
The project has not only succeeded in restoring a holiday favorite but has also sparked discussions for future collaborations. Peffer mentioned that there are plans to work with San Jose State on an entirely new display for the next holiday season, potentially involving multiple departments, including marketing and design.
“It’s really neat to see the different iterations and problem-solving these guys have been doing,” Peffer said. The engineering students have demonstrated a commitment to sustainability and maintenance, ensuring that the display lasts for many seasons to come.
In addition to the collaboration with San Jose State, Ted Lopez, Executive Director of Christmas in the Park, highlighted that the nonprofit has secured a five-year sponsorship with Broadway San Jose. There are also plans for a partnership with ArtHouse Studio, which will showcase student artwork through digital displays during the event.
Holiday Festivities Ahead
The installation of the Penguin Flight School display is set to begin this week, with everything prepared for the opening and tree-lighting ceremony on November 28, 2025. The community can look forward to enjoying this enchanting display as part of the festive activities.
Tickets are also available for the Blinky’s Drive Thru Light Show at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, which opens on November 21. More information about the events can be found at www.christmasinthepark.com.
The efforts of these San Jose State students not only contribute to the joy of the holiday season but also exemplify the impact of academic collaboration in addressing community needs. As the students prepare for the upcoming display, their hard work will undoubtedly help to create lasting memories for visitors of all ages.
