Ohio Sees Sharp Rise in Carfentanil Seizures Amid New Threats

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) has reported a troubling resurgence of the synthetic opioid carfentanil, with seizures significantly increasing across the state. As of now, there have been 199 instances of carfentanil found in drug samples in 2023, a noticeable rise compared to previous years. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost emphasized the dangers posed by these potent substances, warning that “the amateur chemists who create these deadly drug combinations don’t care if you live or die.” He cautioned that using unprescribed drugs heightens the risk of exposure to lethal synthetic opioids.

Despite a substantial decline in carfentanil occurrences after peaking in 2017 with 1,119 samples detected, the current increase presents a serious threat across 46 counties in Ohio. The central and northwestern regions of the state have seen the highest concentration of seizures, with alarming signs of the drug spreading into southern counties as well.

Emerging Synthetic Opioids Add to Concerns

The BCI has also identified a new synthetic opioid compound, N-propionitrile chlorphine, commonly referred to as cychlorphine. This substance was discovered in a tan powder form and has been associated with a non-fatal overdose in Fairfield’s Butler County. First responders reported that multiple doses of Narcan were necessary to revive the individual affected by this new opioid.

Cychlorphine’s effects mirror those of fentanyl, raising alarms for public health officials. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) noted related incidents in Tennessee in July 2025 and a previous seizure in Florida in April 2024. The emergence of this compound underscores the evolving landscape of the opioid crisis, complicating efforts to combat drug abuse and protect communities.

The variations of carfentanil found in Ohio include powders, tablets, and liquids, presented in an array of colors from white to purple. These developments highlight the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and health officials in tackling the opioid epidemic, as the presence of such dangerous substances continues to pose significant risks to public safety.

As Ohio grapples with this resurgence, authorities remain focused on raising awareness about the dangers associated with synthetic opioids, urging the public to seek help and avoid illicit drug use.
