NORAD Tracks Russian Bombers and Fighters in Alaskan Air Zone
The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that multiple Russian military aircraft were detected in the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Wednesday. The aircraft included two Tu-95 strategic bombers, capable of carrying cruise missiles, and two Su-35 fighter jets, recognized as some of Russia’s most advanced multi-role aircraft.
In response to this detection, NORAD deployed U.S. aircraft to “positively identify and intercept” the Russian planes. Notably, the Russian military aircraft did not enter U.S. or Canadian sovereign airspace, remaining within international airspace. NORAD characterized this activity as regular and not a threat to national security.
The Alaskan ADIZ is a defined stretch of international airspace where the identification of all aircraft is crucial for maintaining security. According to NORAD, this zone begins where U.S. and Canadian airspace ends. Just last month, an IL-20 COOT was also tracked in the ADIZ, prompting similar responses from NORAD.
Internationally, concerns have escalated as Russian military aircraft have frequently approached the airspace of various European nations amid ongoing tensions related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In early September 2023, Polish forces, assisted by NATO allies, shot down multiple Russian drones that had violated Polish airspace during a strike on Ukraine, as reported by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
In light of these developments, military forces across Europe have commenced operations under a new initiative named “Eastern Sentry,” aimed at strengthening NATO’s defenses following increased Russian incursions into member states’ airspace. Shortly after the Polish drone incidents, Russian fighter jets also entered Estonian airspace, further escalating tensions in the region.
Despite the uptick in Russian military activity near Alaska, NORAD has reiterated that such occurrences are considered routine and do not pose an immediate threat. The command continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring readiness to respond as necessary.
As geopolitical dynamics evolve, the focus remains on maintaining vigilance and safeguarding national airspace while navigating the complexities of international military interactions.
