Tesla Patents Inflatable Aerodynamic Deflector for Cybertruck
Tesla Inc. has filed a patent application for an innovative “inflatable aerodynamic deflector” aimed at enhancing the efficiency of its Cybertruck. This development, submitted in February 2023, has the potential to reduce drag and improve overall performance. While the technology promises to increase efficiency for various vehicles, including trailers and tow vehicles, it may also intensify the ongoing debate surrounding the Cybertruck’s controversial design.
The patent describes a structure made from drop stitch material that creates air chambers between parallel skins. Through this mechanism, Tesla aims to optimize airflow around the vehicle, potentially leading to better fuel economy and performance metrics.
Despite these advancements, the Cybertruck’s design has faced criticism from industry experts. Notably, Gary Black, managing director of Future Fund LLC, has suggested that a more traditional appearance could help boost Tesla’s sales figures. The current design has been polarizing, with strong opinions both for and against its aesthetics.
Cybertruck’s Performance and Sales Challenges
Interestingly, the Cybertruck has recently demonstrated impressive performance in a quarter-mile drag race, surpassing a Porsche 911 while towing another 911. This feat highlights the vehicle’s capability, yet sales figures remain underwhelming. Reports indicate that Tesla has a backlog of approximately 10,000 unsold Cybertrucks in the United States, despite selling over 46,000 units since the vehicle’s launch. With an annual production capacity of 250,000 units, the current inventory raises questions about market demand.
Amid these sales challenges, Tesla has made significant changes to its Cybertruck offerings. The company has discontinued the affordable RWD Long Range trim, which was priced at $69,990. This version featured reduced ground clearance and towing capacity compared to the standard trims. Simultaneously, Tesla has increased the price of the high-end Cyberbeast trim to $114,990, which includes the “Luxe Package,” providing features like Supervised Full Self-Driving (FSD) and free access to Tesla’s Supercharger Network.
Despite the fluctuations in pricing and inventory, Tesla continues to perform well on various metrics, particularly in momentum and growth, while maintaining satisfactory quality ratings. The company’s pricing trends appear favorable in both the short and long term, signaling potential resilience in the face of current challenges.
As Tesla moves forward with its innovative designs and technology, the future of the Cybertruck remains closely watched by industry analysts and consumers alike. For ongoing insights into Tesla’s strategies and market performance, resources like Benzinga provide valuable coverage and analysis.
