Fatal Hit-and-Run Crash on State Route 125 Claims Passenger’s Life

A tragic incident on State Route 125 in Lemon Grove, California, has resulted in the death of a 26-year-old passenger following a hit-and-run collision involving three vehicles. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported the accident occurred at approximately 4:28 a.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The sequence of events began when an unidentified driver was operating a 2023 Nissan Sentra northbound on SR-125, south of Spring Street. The Nissan was carrying a passenger from San Diego. In a separate vehicle, a 2007 Mercedes E350 was being driven by a 35-year-old man from Maryland, accompanied by two female passengers. This Mercedes had reportedly stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.

The investigation indicates that for reasons yet to be determined, the driver of the Nissan veered onto the right shoulder and collided with the rear of the stationary Mercedes. The impact propelled the Mercedes forward while the Nissan came to a standstill, obstructing multiple lanes of the highway.

A 2022 Ford Edge, driven by a 33-year-old woman from San Diego, was traveling northbound on SR-125 and could not avoid crashing into the Nissan. This collision forced both the Nissan and the Ford into the center median.

Following the crash, one individual from the Nissan fled the scene on foot. Tragically, the 26-year-old passenger died from his injuries at the site of the incident, as confirmed by the CHP. The driver and passengers of the Mercedes were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, as was the woman driving the Ford.

Authorities are currently investigating whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash. CHP officials are appealing to the public for any information related to the incident, urging witnesses to contact the California Highway Patrol’s El Cajon Area Office at 619-219-6900.
