Early Screening of ‘Bugonia’ Requires Baldness for Admission

A unique opportunity arises for film enthusiasts in Los Angeles who wish to see Bugonia before its official release. The screening, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, will take place on October 20, 2023, at the Culver Theater at 20:00. While tickets are free, there is a notable requirement: attendees must be bald or willing to shave their heads to gain entry.

This unconventional screening follows a similar promotional event for The Long Walk. The catch is that those who arrive with hair will have the option to shave it off on-site, starting at 18:00, with a barber available for the task. The screening will also be filmed by Focus Features for promotional content, reminiscent of marketing strategies used for horror films.

Bugonia features Emma Stone in the lead role of Michelle, a pharmaceutical CEO who finds herself kidnapped by two conspiracy theorists, Teddy (played by Jesse Plemons) and Don (portrayed by Aidan Delbis). The duo believes Michelle is an alien intent on destroying Earth. During her captivity, they take the extreme measure of shaving her head to prevent her from contacting her supposed spaceship.

Stone has previously discussed her experience of going bald for the role, describing it as liberating. She expressed her enthusiasm for the transformation, calling it “pretty great” back in August. For those not keen on baldness, Bugonia will be released in theaters on October 24, 2023, allowing audiences to enjoy the film without undergoing a drastic hairstyle change.

This engaging promotional tactic not only generates buzz for the film but also showcases the lengths to which actors and filmmakers go to immerse themselves in their roles. As excitement builds for Bugonia, this screening promises to be a memorable event for those bold enough to embrace the bald.
