The Thanksgiving travel season is gaining momentum across the United States, with the American Automobile Association (AAA) projecting over 81 million people will journey at least 50 miles from home during the holiday period. Among these travelers, an estimated 73 million are expected to drive, while others will take to the skies, including many passing through Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

As of Saturday evening, the anticipated travel surge had not yet fully materialized at the airport. Travelers reported a relatively calm atmosphere. “It seems pretty normal, like when I flew home for Christmas,” said Ethan Mcnish-Heider, a student from Niagara University. He noted that there were no significant delays or crowding at security checkpoints.

Departure boards displayed minimal delays, and security lines remained short, a relief for travelers like Simman Mangat. “I was worried that it was going to be busier, so I came, like, three hours ahead of time,” he remarked. “But I was pleasantly surprised to see that it’s not that crazy and not that busy.”

Yet, some passengers expressed caution due to recent travel disruptions linked to the federal government shutdown. Carol Foster shared her experience, stating, “I waited until Tuesday to get my ticket. With the government shutdown, I was worried about whether I would be able to fly on time, especially during the busiest time of the year.”

With the government now reopened and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lifting all restrictions, airlines have returned to normal operations. The FAA has cautioned that the upcoming Tuesday may emerge as one of the busiest travel days in 15 years.

As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, travelers are advised to remain vigilant and plan accordingly, as the surge in travel is expected to continue throughout the week.
