Scores of community members gathered on March 12, 2024, at the Angelina and Neches River Railroad’s offices in Lufkin, Texas, to celebrate the railroad’s 125th anniversary. The event, hosted by the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, featured a “red carpet salute” that honored the railroad’s long-standing service to the region.

Chamber diplomat Cynthia Bluethman welcomed attendees and remarked on the pleasant weather that accompanied the festivities. The event included notable presentations, including a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol, which was presented to railroad president David Perkins by Melinda Kartye of Congressman Pete Sessions‘ office. Kartye conveyed Sessions’ regrets for not being present, as he was in Washington, D.C., for work commitments.

In addition, Linda Parker from State Representative Trent Ashby‘s office presented Perkins with a Texas flag that had been flown over the state capitol. The ceremony also featured a tribute from Tanya Dora, executive director of the Texas Forest Country Partnership, who read a letter from Senator John Cornyn honoring the railroad’s significant history and impact.

During his address, Perkins expressed gratitude to the community for their support and recognized the elected officials in attendance. He stated, “We wouldn’t be standing here without our shareholders,” emphasizing the importance of community and partnership.

Perkins highlighted the railroad’s legacy, noting that it represents the last remnant of a family-owned business empire. He acknowledged that while rail travel may not be the fastest mode of transportation, it remains the most cost-effective. He expressed appreciation for both current and former employees, attributing the railroad’s success to its founders: Simon Henderson, Joseph Kurth, and brothers Eli and Sam Wiener.

“We are proud to partner with local businesses, major corporations, and Union Pacific today,” Perkins added. He concluded with an optimistic outlook, stating, “I look forward to many more years of service on the tracks ahead.”

The celebration served not only as a milestone for the Angelina and Neches River Railroad but also as a reminder of its enduring role in supporting economic growth and connectivity in the region.
