Dr. William Chey Takes Office as President of American College of Gastroenterology
Dr. William D. Chey, a prominent gastroenterologist, has been elected as the 2025–2026 President of the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). This national medical organization represents over 20,000 clinical gastroenterologists and specialists in digestive diseases. Dr. Chey officially began his term during the ACG’s Annual Scientific Meeting and Postgraduate Course held this week in Phoenix, AZ.
Dr. Chey is the H. Marvin Pollard Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Michigan and has a joint appointment as a Professor of Nutrition Sciences. He has led the Division of Gastroenterology since 2022, focusing his clinical interests on disorders related to gut-brain interactions and H. pylori infection. His extensive research contributions include more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, along with numerous clinical practice guidelines.
Throughout his career, Dr. Chey has been a mentor to over 70 students and junior faculty, many of whom have become leaders in the field of gastroenterology. His editorial experience includes serving as co-Editor-in-Chief of The American Journal of Gastroenterology from 2010 to 2016 and founding co-Editor-in-Chief of Clinical & Translational Gastroenterology.
In his new role as ACG President, Dr. Chey will guide the Board of Trustees in overseeing the College’s mission and vision. This includes directing ACG’s programs related to continuing medical education, health policy issues, and clinical investigation. He has held multiple leadership positions in national and international societies, such as being a former Council member of the American Neurogastroenterology & Motility Society and currently serving on the Board of Directors of the Rome Foundation and as Vice President of the International Foundation of GI Disorders.
Dr. Chey has been a member of ACG since 1993 and joined the ACG Board of Trustees in 2010. He became a Master of the ACG (MACG) in 2025 and has participated in various ACG committees, including Educational Affairs and Finance and Budget. His contributions to the field have been recognized through invitations to deliver prestigious lectures at the ACG Annual Scientific Meeting, including the David Sun Memorial Lecture in 2015 and the J. Edward Berk Distinguished Lecture in 2020. He also received the ACG Berk-Fise Award in 2020.
