A crew member aboard P&O Cruises’ MS Arvia died following an onboard accident, prompting the ship to make an unscheduled stop in Spain just two days into its 14-day transatlantic journey. The incident occurred on October 26, 2023, while the vessel was en route from Southampton, England, to the Caribbean.

The cruise line confirmed the death, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers are with their family and friends both on board and at home, and we are providing every possible support to them.” The identity of the deceased male worker has not been disclosed.

Details of the Incident

The MS Arvia docked at the Port of A Coruña in northwestern Spain on October 29, where it remained from 15:00 until nightfall before continuing its voyage to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, located in the Canary Islands. Port officials noted the diversion was due to the workplace accident involving the crew member.

Despite inquiries, details surrounding the incident, including the cause of death, have not been released. P&O Cruises, a subsidiary of Carnival UK, stated that it is fully cooperating with authorities and offering support to the crew member’s family and colleagues.

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch has announced plans to board the ship at its next scheduled stop to initiate a preliminary assessment of the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Voyage Details and Impact

The MS Arvia, which can accommodate up to 5,200 guests and 1,800 crew members, embarked on its journey on October 24, 2023. Following its stop in A Coruña, the ship is set to continue across the Atlantic, with stops planned at several Caribbean destinations before arriving in Bridgetown, Barbados, on November 7.

This tragedy occurred shortly before another incident in the cruise industry, as a crew member aboard the Viking Star fell overboard in the Mediterranean Sea on the same day. An emergency response and search operation was launched for that unidentified individual, who was part of a voyage between Athens, Greece, and Turkey.

As the cruise industry faces scrutiny over safety protocols and crew welfare, incidents like these highlight the inherent risks associated with maritime operations. P&O Cruises has yet to comment further on the impact of this accident on its operations or any measures it may implement in response.
