I-5 Closure Near Camp Pendleton for Live Ammunition Event
A section of Interstate 5 (I-5) near Camp Pendleton, California, will be closed on October 18, 2023, due to a military event involving the discharge of live ammunition over the freeway. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) announced that this temporary closure will affect both northbound and southbound lanes of I-5 between Harbor Drive and Basilone Road, beginning around 12:00 PM. The precise duration of the closure is not yet confirmed, as it will depend on the conclusion of the military operation.
The operation is part of the United States Marine Corps’ 250th Anniversary celebrations, where Vice President JD Vance is scheduled to deliver remarks in honor of the military branch. Vance, a former Marine, is expected to address attendees at the event.
In response to the planned military exercise, California Governor Gavin Newsom expressed strong criticism of the federal government’s decision to proceed with the event. In a statement issued on the morning of the closure, he remarked, “The President is putting his ego over responsibility with this disregard for public safety. Firing live rounds over a busy highway isn’t just wrong — it’s dangerous.”
Despite the backlash from state officials, the CHP confirmed that the closure will still go ahead as planned. Motorists can expect significant delays, not only on I-5 but also on other major routes throughout Southern California, both before and during the event. To minimize inconvenience, the CHP strongly advises drivers to seek alternative routes and to allocate additional travel time.
