Hearn Urges Joshua and Fury to Face Off Without Delay
Promoter Eddie Hearn insists that a showdown between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury is unavoidable and should happen soon. Fury has expressed a desire to return to the boxing ring next year, potentially seeking a trilogy fight with Oleksandr Usyk. Nevertheless, Hearn believes that both fighters must face each other before either can realistically pursue a third match against Usyk, who has defeated Fury twice.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Hearn emphasized the competitive nature of both boxers. “The only person that’s beaten Tyson Fury is Oleksandr Usyk, and he’s beaten him twice,” Hearn stated. He noted that Joshua is also eager for a rematch with Usyk but understands that he cannot demand it at this stage, given his recent defeat to the Ukrainian champion.
Both Fury and Joshua are coming off losses, complicating their paths forward. Hearn pointed out that a trilogy fight for Fury, who currently stands at 0-2 against Usyk, is unlikely to generate significant interest. “No one’s interested in Fury against Usyk, no one’s interested in AJ against Usyk,” he remarked, highlighting the public’s craving for the long-anticipated clash between Joshua and Fury.
Future Plans for Joshua and Fury
Hearn questioned the delay in organizing the Joshua versus Fury bout, asking, “Why delay the inevitable?” He believes the fight should be prioritized over other matchups. While Usyk has recently announced his intention to continue boxing for another two years, the promoter thinks that the demand for a potential fight between Joshua and Fury far outweighs that for Usyk’s rematches.
Reflecting on Usyk’s potential longevity in the sport, Hearn remarked, “He battered Daniel Dubois. He’s in his absolute pomp, isn’t he?” Hearn noted that as long as Usyk remains motivated and fit, the boxing community can expect him to continue competing at a high level. He mused about the possibility of the winner between Joshua and Fury eventually facing Usyk in the future, but emphasized that the immediate focus should be on making the Joshua-Fury fight happen.
Joshua’s immediate plans include a comeback fight in February 2024, with Hearn suggesting the possibility of a preliminary match before the year’s end. “You’ve sometimes got to do what’s right for the fighter,” Hearn stated, explaining that Joshua needs opportunities to build momentum without the intense pressure typically associated with his high-profile bouts.
Hearn’s comments reflect a growing urgency within the boxing community for the heavyweight clash that fans have long awaited. As both Joshua and Fury navigate their careers following recent setbacks, the anticipation for their potential meeting continues to build, with many eager to see who will emerge as the dominant force in the heavyweight division.
