Marc Guehi has announced that he will leave Crystal Palace next summer after rejecting a contract extension. The 25-year-old centre-back’s current deal is set to expire in June 2024, which opens the possibility for him to transfer during the January window or leave as a free agent. This decision comes after Guehi was on the verge of joining Liverpool before a late deadline day decision prevented the transfer.

Contract Situation and Future Prospects

Head coach Oliver Glasner confirmed Guehi’s intentions during a press conference, stating, “I think Marc has already told us that he doesn’t sign a new contract, so he will leave next year.” The club had expressed their desire for Guehi to remain, offering him a new contract that he ultimately declined, indicating a preference to pursue different opportunities.

Glasner noted, “The club wanted him to stay. But he said, ‘no, I want to make something different.’ And that’s normal.” This clarity on Guehi’s future allows the club to strategize on how to manage the situation effectively.

While it remains uncertain whether Guehi will reignite interest from Liverpool, reports from The Athletic on October 14, 2023, suggest that if a transfer were to occur, it would more likely happen next summer rather than in January. This timeline would enable Guehi to secure a substantial signing bonus as a free agent.

Interest from Other Clubs

Guehi has also attracted attention from Newcastle United, who made multiple attempts to sign the England international during the summer transfer window. Their last bid reached £65 million with add-ons, but it was ultimately rejected by Palace.

Despite the upheaval regarding his future, Glasner expressed confidence in Guehi’s commitment. “I have no concerns at all about Guehi. I am convinced as long as Marc is playing for Palace, he will give 100 percent,” he stated, acknowledging that the player initially felt disappointment over the failed Liverpool transfer but has since refocused on his role within the team.

In a statement regarding his situation, Guehi said, “I don’t have much to say, to be honest. I’m focused on playing football and playing for this club. But to the fans, I want to say thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it.”

This marks the fourth consecutive summer in which a key player has departed from Crystal Palace. Following the exits of Wilfried Zaha to Galatasaray in 2023, Michael Olise to Bayern Munich in 2024, and Eberechi Eze to Arsenal this summer, Guehi’s departure signals a continuing trend that could impact the club’s future dynamics.

Guehi has been a crucial player for Palace since joining from Chelsea in 2021 and has participated in all 12 matches this season. He also played a significant role in England’s recent 3-0 victory over Wales on October 9, contributing with two assists.

Crystal Palace currently sits sixth in the Premier League standings and will face fourth-placed Bournemouth at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
