Minnesota Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz will make his fourth consecutive start on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, as confirmed by head coach Kevin O’Connell on Friday. This decision comes as original starter J.J. McCarthy continues his recovery from a high right ankle sprain suffered on September 14, 2023.

McCarthy, who returned to practice this week, indicated that his ankle is not yet fully healed. He stated on Wednesday that multiple second opinions suggested a recovery timeline of up to six weeks. Although he participated in limited practice sessions throughout the week, O’Connell expressed a desire to ensure McCarthy is fully fit before including him in a game. For Sunday’s matchup, McCarthy will serve as the emergency third quarterback, while rookie Max Brosmer will back up Wentz.

Wentz, drafted by the Eagles in 2016, has a history with the team but downplayed any emotional ties ahead of the game. Reflecting on his time in Philadelphia, he remarked, “Maybe earlier in my career I had a different feeling… but at the same time, that feels like multiple lifetimes ago at this point.”

Since joining the Vikings on August 24, 2023, Wentz has steered the team to a 2-1 record in three starts following McCarthy’s injury. He has completed 69% of his passes for 759 yards, along with five touchdowns and two interceptions. Despite a QBR of 40.5, ranking No. 28 in the NFL, Wentz has shown resilience. He sustained a left shoulder injury on October 5, 2023, against the Cleveland Browns but only missed one play, returning to the field with a harness.

O’Connell expressed confidence in Wentz’s ability to lead the team, highlighting his experience and adaptability. He noted that Wentz’s preparation this week has been commendable. “He got a ton of reps this week, both with the first group and also with the scout team,” O’Connell said. “I was proud of the way he attacked the week.”

As the Vikings prepare for this significant game, Wentz’s leadership and performance will be critical against a formidable Eagles defense. The matchup promises to be an exciting contest, with both teams looking to strengthen their positions in the league standings.
