Zohran Mamdani Leads New York Mayoral Race by 21 Points

A recent Fox News poll indicates that Zohran Mamdani, a Progressive Democratic assembly member, holds a substantial 21-point lead in the race for mayor of New York City. This poll suggests that voters regard him as the most capable candidate to tackle the city’s pressing issues. If elected on November 4, 2025, Mamdani would make history as the city’s first Muslim mayor.

The New York mayoral election is drawing national attention due to its implications for major policy shifts in the United States. Mamdani, who identifies as a Democratic socialist, has garnered support from 49 percent of registered voters, compared to 28 percent for independent candidate and former state governor Andrew Cuomo, and 13 percent for Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Among likely voters, Mamdani’s backing increases to 52 percent.

This poll, conducted from October 10-14, included interviews with 1,003 registered voters in New York, selected randomly from a voter file. According to Fox News, “The Democratic nominee is maintaining a substantial lead as voters see him as best to handle the city’s top problems.” Support for Mamdani has increased by 5 percentage points since the previous poll in September.

Mamdani’s strongest backing comes from very liberal voters, with 78 percent support. He also appeals significantly to younger voters, Democrats, and women under 45 years old. Conversely, Cuomo has the support of 44 percent of moderates and voters aged over 65, as well as 42 percent of women over 45 and 35 percent of independents.

The top concerns among voters include crime, cited by 25 percent, followed by the cost of living at 20 percent, and housing at 16 percent. During a debate held on October 15, Mamdani faced questions regarding the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which has generated controversy between pro-Palestinian activists and segments of New York’s Jewish community. The Fox poll found that 42 percent of Jewish voters favor Cuomo, while 38 percent back Mamdani.

Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who collaborates with Democratic pollster Chris Anderson for Fox News polls, noted that the critical factor will be voter turnout. He questioned whether voters who oppose Mamdani but are uncertain about their alternatives will still support Cuomo.

The upcoming New York mayoral election is poised to be a pivotal moment, not only for the city but also for broader national trends. The next debate among the leading candidates is scheduled for October 22, providing another opportunity for them to present their visions to the electorate.
