Leonardo DiCaprio’s Action Film Faces $100 Million Loss

Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest action film, One Battle After Another, is projected to incur losses exceeding $100 million, despite its box office success. The film, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, has garnered significant acclaim, boasting scores of 95% from critics and 85% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. After nearly a month in theaters, it has grossed approximately $141 million globally, surpassing its production budget of $130 million.
The financial outlook for the film is troubling for Warner Bros.. In addition to its production costs, the studio invested roughly $70 million in marketing. This combination raises the break-even point to around $300 million, as studios typically share ticket sales with theaters at a near 50-50 split. Currently, with $141 million in earnings, One Battle After Another is still far from recouping its expenses.
Despite the anticipated financial loss, the film is expected to thrive in other avenues. Its upcoming release on HBO Max later this year is expected to attract significant viewership. Additionally, the film is likely to find success in video-on-demand (VOD) platforms, where it could maintain strong sales prior to its streaming debut.
As awards season approaches, One Battle After Another has emerged as a strong contender for accolades, which could enhance its visibility and revenue potential. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Benicio del Toro, adding to its appeal.
Future Prospects for One Battle After Another
Currently, One Battle After Another remains exclusively in theaters, but its theatrical run is nearing completion. Industry insiders speculate that it could soon be available on platforms such as Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Apple TV. While Warner Bros. typically does not provide advance notice for streaming releases, it is anticipated that the film will become available on HBO Max around December 2025.
The film’s unique blend of action and critical acclaim positions it for long-term success, even as it faces substantial immediate losses. As audiences await its streaming release, the future for One Battle After Another may still hold promise, particularly if it garners the recognition it seeks during awards season.
