Young Woman Transforms Life by Touring America in Van

Ashley Kaye, a young woman from Wisconsin, has transformed her life by selling her house and embarking on a journey across America in a customized van. This significant lifestyle change was inspired by a trip to Honduras in 2019, where Kaye met someone who lived a life of perpetual travel. Upon returning home, she dedicated a year to saving money before launching into her new adventure.

In 2020, Kaye left her traditional job with savings of approximately $37,000. She sold her childhood home and purchased a Toyota Tacoma in South Dakota. After modifying the vehicle in Baja California, she set off to drive the renowned Pan-American Highway, which stretches from Alaska to Argentina. Kaye shared her experiences on social media, connecting with a couple who introduced her to the concept of overlanding—a self-sufficient way to explore remote areas.

Embracing Life on the Road

Kaye’s journey is not just about driving; it’s about embracing freedom and adventure. She enjoys setting her own pace and often stays in beautiful locations for several days. “It is truly an amazing way to travel because you can set your own pace,” she said. Kaye typically drives for 5-7 hours each day, taking time to enjoy the scenery and relax at various stops.

While the experience is exhilarating, it comes with its own set of expenses. Kaye estimates her monthly costs at around $1,200, which includes about $556 for gas and $453 for food. Additional expenses include $96 for her mobile phone and $200 for Starlink Internet. Despite these costs, Kaye indulged in a memorable diving trip to the Galapagos Islands, spending $6,000 for the week-long adventure.

Kaye acknowledges that the initial adjustment to a life on the road was challenging. With an abundance of free time, she struggled to find a routine. “Once I got into my rhythm of traveling and building my confidence through that experience, I’ve never looked back,” she stated in an interview with CNBC.

Future Plans and Reflections

Despite the joy she finds in her travels, Kaye admits that the constant driving can be tiring. “Part of me just wants to get rid of it and move on to the next chapter of my life,” she reflected. Yet, she remains torn, as she desires to explore more places and continue her adventures.

Looking ahead, Kaye has no plans to return to Wisconsin. Instead, she envisions settling in Europe, possibly in Italy, Spain, or the South of France, once she decides to sell her truck. For now, Kaye revels in the beauty of nature and the freedom that comes with life on the road, content with her decision to embrace a lifestyle that many only dream about.
