Israeli Military Shoots Two Men in West Bank After Surrender Attempt
Israeli military forces shot and killed two men in Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank, following what authorities described as a “surrender procedure.” This incident has prompted a review by Israeli officials and raised significant concerns from the Palestinian Authority, which condemned the actions as a violation of international law.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported that the two individuals, identified as Al-Muntasir Mahmoud Qassem Abdullah, aged 26, and Youssef Ali Youssef Asasa, aged 37, were wanted for their alleged involvement in terrorist activities. The IDF’s statement indicated that the military, in cooperation with border police, had been conducting operations to arrest these individuals, who were accused of attacking security forces with explosive devices and gunfire.
According to the IDF, the process leading to the shooting lasted several hours, with the men ultimately exiting a building after an engineering vehicle was employed. The statement specified, “After they exited the building, gunfire was carried out at the wanted individuals.”
Video footage shared on social media depicted the two men emerging from the building with their hands raised in apparent surrender, surrounded by Israeli soldiers. Subsequent clips showed the men on the ground in front of the building, before the sound of multiple gunshots rang out. Eyewitness accounts and the video suggested that at least one of the men was shot while lying on the ground.
Investigation and Reactions
The incident is currently under investigation by field commanders and will be reviewed by relevant authorities, as stated by the IDF. This shooting occurred against the backdrop of a broader Israeli military operation in the West Bank, which involved searching over 220 sites, questioning dozens of individuals, and arresting several others deemed wanted.
In the wake of the incident, Itamar Ben Gvir, Israel’s far-right National Security Minister, expressed his support for the military actions. He wrote on social media, “I fully back the Border Police fighters and IDF soldiers who fired at wanted terrorists who came out of a building in Jenin. The fighters acted exactly as expected of them – terrorists must die!”
The Palestinian Authority, which confirmed the deaths of Abdullah and Asasa, condemned the shooting as a “fully-fledged war crime” and a “flagrant violation of all international laws, conventions, norms, and humanitarian values.” This incident adds to the ongoing tensions in the region and raises questions about the conduct of military operations in populated areas.
The situation in Jenin remains fluid, with both local and international observers closely monitoring developments. As the investigation progresses, the implications of this incident will likely resonate within the broader context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
