Tourist Dies After Shark Attack in Crowdy Bay, Australia
A tragic incident occurred in Crowdy Bay, eastern Australia, where a tourist in her 20s died following a shark bite on March 28, 2024. A male companion, also in his 20s, sustained serious injuries in the attack and was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition, according to a statement from the New South Wales Police.
Emergency services responded to the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Wednesday ET) after reports emerged that two individuals had been bitten by a shark. Despite the efforts of bystanders who provided first aid, the woman tragically died at the scene.
Details of the Attack
The victims were identified as tourists from Switzerland. The police have not yet confirmed the species of shark involved in this attack, which took place about 350 kilometers (217 miles) north of Sydney. Ambulance superintendent Joshua Smyth stated that the woman had already succumbed to her injuries by the time paramedics arrived. He commended a bystander for applying a tourniquet to the male victim’s leg, which he noted “potentially saved his life and allowed New South Wales Ambulance paramedics to get to him and render first aid.”
In a statement, Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, expressed condolences to the families of the victims. He described the incident as a “terrible tragedy” and noted that local rescue teams were deploying drones to monitor the area for any remaining dangers. “We have been able to activate our drone capability quickly and have assets on scene to provide surveillance,” Pearce added.
Safety Measures and Community Response
In light of the attack, nearby beaches will be closed for at least 24 hours while authorities search for the shark. Local officials urge the public to avoid the water and heed the instructions of lifeguards. The community is in mourning as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
As officials work to assess the situation and ensure public safety, the focus remains on supporting the families affected by this devastating loss. The incident underscores the inherent risks associated with ocean activities, particularly in areas known for shark sightings.
